No you don't need 1 . 0 . 1 . 7, the installer says it will update from either of these - 1 . 0 . 1. 5 ; 1 . 0 . 1 . 6 or 1 . 0 . 1 . 7 ... Personally I've updated from 1 . 0 . 1 . 6 and didn't have any issues.

One thing that is immediately noticeable is the game loads much quicker ... As to the actual perfomrance, I haven't had a chance to really test it yet.
