That entirely depends on your expectations and what you have as a configuration to play on.

Admittedly the game is not the most optimized one that has been ever released, it's getting a bit better with every patch.

The thing is, many people say it's just a hog without offering anything in visual fidelity whish is plain FLASE.

I've a friend who has completed the original game as well as this one, and in his own words;
"Yeah, the game is extremely unoptimized, however Ellie doesn't look like a crashed box anymore in the latest version for PC/PS5 ... which comes at a cost ..."

What I would do is test it out with D3DVK mod from nexusmods<REPLACE-WITH-DOT>com/thelastofuspart1/mods/21?tab=description

See the picture (it's mine) - with the D3DVK mod from above it's allocating 6552MBs of VRAM on 1080p High preset and that's lower that if you play with DX12... (will post the picture separately)

This is not optimal, but the layer is reducing the VRAM needed for each preset and makes it possible to play on lower (older) end GPUs.

Also, despite the VRAM, please, don't forget that this game is using an engine that's really heavy on the CPU as well (AVX support and Single core performance)...

Lower resolutions (720/1080) = HEAVY on CPU, combined with heavy VRAM requirements (4gb is just not cutting it, 6gb on the fence with D3DVK mod, 8gb maybe ...

Mid resolution (1440p) = STILL HEAVY on CPU with even bigger VRAM requirements (for these better textures
In both these situations it's maxing out a few threads on 5900x and there are still inconsistencies ....

4k - Normal on CPU and heavy on GPU and VRAM - that's where the 12GB becomes insufficient as well ...

The point here is - if you manage your expectations and know your system's limitations it's playable and enjoyable...

If you expect top tier visual fidelity from a not top tier configuration - you'd be disappointed ...

You know, there are such beasts like STAR WARS Jedi: Survivor who are running like crap on Ryzen 7800x3D with RTX 4090 at 1440p, so ... if we consider that level of UNoptimization, TLOU is a masterpiece :)

I don't know if I should take that as a compliment or not :) But the reason for the picture was to illustrate that the mod I referenced (I'm not using it, but it's the same concept - using D3DVK to render in Vulkan rather than DX 12) is actually allowing people with lower amount of VRAM to tune up the game to NOT spill assets to normal ram which is causing the game to become jittery, cause frametime spikes, and make it overall un-enjoyable ;)

One thing I've noticed with 1-0-4-1 is that the shaders compilation didn't crash even once where it was crashing like crazy with 1-0-2-0 and below ...

Another very interesting thing is shaders compiled:
Vulkan - 192 MBs on disk
DX12 - 11.3 GB (that's gigabytes) on disk ...

The difference is insane :)

Last, but not least for tonight ... a lot of people don't get the importance of good frame pacing (frametimes) ... If I can get a game to run with straight line of Frametime at 55 FPS I'd take that instead of a game running between 55-75 fps with Frametime graph looking like someone is having an adrenaline injection ...
So what I mean by that is I'd very carefully observer 1% lows (actually 0.1% lows, but that's nitpicking) and will lock my Framerate via RTSS (Riva Tuner Statistics Server) to 1% FPS - 10 FPS, e.g.

1% Lows is 80 - Lock at 70
1% lows is 110 - Lock at 100

The same principle can be applied with Average FPS, however the game will still be unstable here and there ... still much better than fully unlocked.

Alright, that's the last last - NEVER, EVER, EVER (sorry for the caps, but can't emphasize that enough) lock the FPS in game or from the driver (Nvidia or AMD alike) - only do it from RTSS - much better and more consistent results ...

For example, let's take a look at this picture ...

This is 1080p High settings, very short run of about 1 minute, and based ono it I would either:

1) Lock based on 0.1% FPS - 71-10(11) = 60fps and be SUPER 101% confident that I'd have a rock solid 60 fps experience no matter what happens ....

2) Or, lock based on 0.1% FPS - 85-10 = 75 FPS (filling my 1080p 75Hz) monitor and have a great time dropping just occasionally

3) Or, lock based on Avrg FPS - 137 - 20(!!! that's because it's much more volotile metric) = 110 FPS and know that some areas of the game will be more demanding and I will most certainly drop to 70-80 fps here and there, but that doesn't bother me, if I've any decent 1080p display with Freesync/G-Sync - as it will compensate and I won't feel the stutters)...

So options ranked (all of which used 7.2 - 7.5 GBs of VRAM with VULKAN)
1 - Flawless 1080 60 fps experience with Vulkan

2 - Great 1080p 75 fps experience Vulkan (maxing out my 75Hz monitor)

3 - Good/Decent 90+ FPS experience with Vulkan, but expected to drop here and there, and easily compensable with FreeSync/G-Sync display...
