On the topic of who actually wants the war to happen to unite the country over a single issue, you could check the approval ratings of Russia's Putin and Ukraine's Zelensky. For Zelensky actively provoking Russia into a war is the best bet at appeasing nationalists and not getting ousted just like his predecessors.
Russia-China relations are complicated, "alliance" is very much conditional and relies on Russians supplying resources and not deviating much from Chinese geopolitically. Long-term as China integrates into globohomo and/or pressures Russia to take a stance on India or some other Russian economical partner it will either lead to another Sino-Russian split or Chinese annexation of Russia. Russia still (mistakenly) sees future as multipolar, while China sees it as sinocentric. It is NATO members who by thinking with "Cold War mentality" continue to push Russia into Chinese arms, losing themselves an economic (as is the case with Germany) and strategic ally.

Im a realist eastern Ukraine speaks Russian while western Ukraine speaks Ukrainian. If there were to be a war it would essentially be Russia annexing eastern Ukraine probably securing a buffer for Crimea.

I get annoyed by American "political experts" who act like Vladimir Putin is some monster who won't stop and has ambitions for all of Europe.

Russia knows the future ideally would be one where Russia can pit china's sphere of influence against NATO or indias sphere of influence. China however has ambitions beyond it's immediate border. For now both sides are remaining cordial but a couple decades down the road Russia and china might end up in a war.

Realistically speaking a third world war might not even involve the US directly.
