I genuinely don't understand why Russia is doing this. What do they have to gain? What does Ukraine have that they want? Putin seems like too smart of a guy to just shell a country because he can. What's the real motivation for all this?

1) Re-establishing buffer state(s?) between West Europe and Russia.

2) Getting access to Black Sea and if possible, Mediterranean Ports

It's far from the first time Russia has tried to accomplish these two goals, in fact those were basically their entire foreign policy pre-USSR.

There's possibly some economic stuff too but I am not as informed on that.

Others have said its Putin's ego but he strikes me as the calculating type as opposed to the egostical type.
