Here in Ireland when bombs went off you knew who was from out of town when they dropped to the ground, natives just walked about and treated it like another day.

The borders have nothing to do with it. Russia literally borders the US in the east and the Baltic states are an even easier route to go through to invade. It has to do with resources and demographics first and foremost.
