President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

Vladimir Putin appears to threaten nuclear strikes if West launches reprisal attacks

The Russian president has warned that any attempt to interfere in the Ukraine conflict would provoke a response 'never seen in history'

Vladimir Putin appeared to threaten nuclear strikes if any country tried to attack Russia in retaliation for the invasion of Ukraine.

In a chilling warning, the Russian president said the “consequences” of any attempt to strike back would provoke a response “never seen in history”.

Putin stopped short of directly saying he would deploy nuclear weapons if the Russian Army was attacked by forces other than Ukraine but analysts believe the threat was implicit.

In his address to the Russian nation, broadcast live on television at 5.45am Moscow time, President Putin said:

"Whoever tries to impede us, let alone create threats for our country and its people, must know that the Russian response will be immediate and lead to the consequences you have never seen in history."

“All relevant decisions have been taken. I hope you hear me.”

In a stark reminder of Russia's nuclear power, Putin then warned that "no one should have any doubts that a direct attack on our country will lead to the destruction and horrible consequences for any potential aggressor”.

The address amounted to a declaration of war on Ukraine, with the aerial bombardment and invasion following shortly after.

Russia’s assault on Ukraine will spark a series of reprisals from the international community that will include economic sanctions but will likely stop short of risking a wider conflict.

In Washington, Joe Biden warned that the US and its allies would respond in a “united and decisive way” while at the United Nations, UN Secretary General Secretary-General António Guterres asked the Russian leader to withdraw his troops and “give peace a chance”.

President Biden, who plans to address the American public on Thursday, said:

“The world will hold Russia accountable.”

Experts said that Putin’s speech appeared to contain the threat of using nuclear weapons to defend itself if attacked.

Professor Sam Greene, politics professor at King's College London and author of Putin v the People, posted on Twitter: “Is he [Putin] threatening nuclear war?”

Miriam Elder, a Russian expert and currently foreign and national security editor for BuzzFeed News, posted on Twitter: “Many awful things in Putin’s early morning address just now but this stood out, sounded like a tacit threat of nuclear war.”

Arkady Ostrovsky, author of the Invention of Russia: From Gorbachev's Freedom to Putin's War, said: "Putin implicitly threatens any outside power wishing to interfere with nuclear strike."

Rest in Peace Bernie Gores

Elections have consequences. Unfortunately Joe Biden and the Democrats have poked the bear, and now innocents are dying. Not that they would care even if American lives were lost.

Fuck Biden, but this is so far beyond him I only pin this on him because of how badly he fucked Afghanistan, since the wonking I've been hearing goes something like this:
- Russia previously had to be concerned about deploying troops to Ukraine with the US having, simply put, Baghram in the east.
- Biden pulls out of Afghanistan (good) but having fucked the deal with the Taliban that would have put them in charge in years instead of days (bad)
- Russia now can freely move troops to play fuck-fuck games in Ukraine to galvanize support for Putin's cult of personality.
- Wait for winter because the tree huggers have ensure that there are no coal or nukes, everything runs on imported Russian natural gas, and no one in the EU is going take the political hit of high heating and electricity prices during the winter over the Ukraine.

This clearly implies they've committed a massive genocide lol
The burning of documents is not to hide evidence of genocide or other problems; it's to keep any intelligence (whatever it is) from falling into enemy hands. It could be papers on genocide, money laundering, human trafficking, payroll, employee profiles, or a borsch recipe someone printed out in the office. Everything made of paper gets burned.

You know what. No bit.
No fun shit posting.

This is sad even by A&N standards for politi-spergs.

A&N lives in an alternate universe where everything is Joe Biden's fault. Half these replies can be moved to the Biden general and they wouldn't even feel out of place

If Biden sent in the troops they would be complaining that he's starting another foreign forever war
If he shows restraint like he's doing now then they'll complain he's acting weak and purposefully letting innocents die

There's no winning with spergs on the internet

I don't disagree, but you apparently didn't get the joke.

People aren't complaining about what Biden should or should not do, they're saying that Biden helped create the conditions that led to this.

Nobody here is going to want a war with Russia so Biden doing nothing is just fine.

Because politics are team sports and retards will choke on commie pinko cock to “fuck Joe Biden and own the libs.”
I will never understand the fascination that fellow far-righters have with Russia and Putin.
Just because there's nationalism involved and because the Libs and Biden say "Russia bad" so therefore "Russia good"?
How are you this easily controlled by reverse psychology? The absolute state of some of you.
Far righters are pissed that Trump was shit on consistently during his presidency, so they think that throwing a fit every time Biden so much as blinks helps their odds at getting Trump re-elected and validates their belief that he's literally the worst president ever and that America is doomed without the guidance of a 75 year old celebrity conman.

Putin is a schizophrenic lunatic madman who is a billion times worse than any western leader, but shut-in NEET faggots are willing to suck his dick because they still haven't recovered from their 2020 election ass pain.
