I've said it before. I have no evidence for this, but I don't think Putin expected the opposition he ended up getting. I feel like he expected to hold Kiev by last night and for the world to be more focused on other things. As I've stated before, Ukraine and the world is very different now than it was a few years ago, and Crimea was a different beast.

Ukraine doesn't hold a chance in a long term war with Russia but it's entirely possible that Russia completely underestimated Ukraine. The way Putin spoke about the country made it seem like he was talking about a little nowhere place in the armpit of Africa.

I'm not an expert in politics, but I can't see how Putin is planning to install a puppet goverment as he wanted, and control the population that now hates Russia much more then ever. What's his endgame anyway?

I don't know why everyone is under the impression that sanctions are a binary thing and it cant get much worse than what Russia is currently faced with. Russia hasn't even been hit with economic measures as severe as Iran, and that's not remotely the limit of what could be done if agreement can be reached among the relevant parties.
