Ukraine isn't in NATO, and US had no real treaties or internationally legal obligations to it regardless. And all the US was doing under Trump was pressure the other NATO members into "paying their fair share".

Nowadays mandatory service is 1 year, so most people aren't in there long enough to really become "old timers" like in the old days. You're in, then one more wave of newbies comes in as you're at your 6 month mark, and then you're demobilized and out.

Most of your time is spent not knowing what the fuck you're supposed to be doing, or painting grass green.
