President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

But Russia may now seek influence its neighboring countries wih military means.
Like trying to "convince" Finland that joining NATO would be bad idea.
Finland is basically just forest, swamps, big lakes without many bridges and a modern army with a decent size compared to the population of the country. Fins trained and prepared only for this since the end of the WW2, it's a country that doesn't has any serious intention of joining the NATO and a country that was always on good terms with Russkies. Invasion would be costly, long and in the end completly not worth it.

Nope. Root servers are all over the world. Russia needs the Internet, just like everyone else, if for nothing else, to spread their messages. And China needs the Internet, as well. For every measure there is a countermeasure.

Speaking of the Internet, also allows us to see Russians protesting the war.

This has turned into Putin's "tar baby". He and his command have fucked this up. They haven't paid attention to the history between Russia and Ukraine.

Vlad, declare victory and go home, while you still can.
Well I woke up today and the internet appears to still be working so I'm assuming that Russia is either still on SWIFT or they really didn't have the cojones to blow up the cables.

Well Kiev is probably lost

Well fuck. That's not good for long-term good relations. That's like driving a giant wall between peoples.

Russia must have considered this. I wonder what plans they have to build an alternative system. I know China has... Crips? Cribs? I forget. But that's much more limited in scope than SWIFT, I believe.
It will affect the average Russian more than the oligarchs, which means Putin and his cronies won't care about it. For now.

Eventually, when the consequences of such sanctions do finally take effect, it will be too late for Russia.

Russia is out of SWIFT. Which meant that Russia's threat against the internet was all hot gas.

Well Kiev is probably lost
It was never a question of will they conquer it, but when. And the real question is, how long can they hold it?

Whitehouse just announced it, Russia and Russian banks are out of SWIFT.

We're cooking with gutter oil now.

India is already setting up an alternative to SWIFT to continue business with Russia. Expect China and others to do the same.

We essentially forced Russia and China together, and it looks like India and several OPEC nations are coming along.

We just forced an alliance between the people who make and power everything against us. Isn't that smart?

They were already friends anyways. Also, China's economy is already falling apart; they're in no shape to help anyone else. Also, India and China hate each other, so if Russia gets too close to one, they will end up alienating the other.

This feels like copium but I still want to believe. Imagine if Russia was forced into a stalemate by a broke ass country a fifth of their size
I can buy it, given the internal weaknesses of Russia and the general apathy of its populace towards this war.

It's really just China and Russia. India needs to pay for upkeep and payments on Russian weapons, so that's why they're going to set up an alternative payment system to do that in Rupees.

The Russia/China one already exists, so if India wanted to join it they could have, but for obvious reasons won't and never will.

And with this Putin makes himself more of a pariah. A tacit admission his conventional forces are not able to win quickly in Ukraine. The butthurt is epic with ol' Vlad these days.

Dude, declare victory and leave.
This is from his speech the first night of the invasion. It's nothing to do with the emerging tarpit but most likely was intended on keeping NATO on its heels. Not sure why it's being presented as new information
Well Kiev is probably lost

Apparently not. https://twitter.com/spdustin/status/1497697933910855686?t=gbzb_ZvObF_h5Csq6nmOJQ&s=19

It's lens flare, not Paras

Theirs will be the 1st booze backed currency.
The result of that will be more broken livers. They will be doing NATO's job for them.

Basically, this war in a nutshell. Old farts from the USSR-era Russian Communist elite sending young boys who don't know what's going on to their deaths, just to appease an old grudge with the West.

At least when Russia entered WW1, its troops were patriotic, ready to fight, believing that they were fighting and dying for the sake of all Slav-kind against the "oppressive" Teutons. Here? They started this war with little morale, and it's only going to go down more as the war goes on.

China and India have their own shooting war with each other, so I doubt India will support Russia if Russia gets too close to China.

This could indeed be the dangerous and @LORD IMPERATOR probably underestimates the Chinese economy
