President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

Oh my Lord, this whole mess is not only cruel, but just plain retarded. Taking Crimea was bad and pushed Russian economy into a shitter, because they started to pour money just there, while keeping the same corruption levels and starving depressed regions even more. Grapsing Ukraine would be a fucking suicide for everyone who isn't Abramovitch.

I'm not talking about the very fact of attacking another country. I believe, at this point everyone knows that war is bad.
I said it before but this shit really reeks of putin having based his entire grand strategy with regards to the west on an absolute certainty (probably due to uncritically swallowing whatever "expert on the west" said things he liked the sound of most) that the loudest social media retards on twitter/youtube/facebook/whatever were infact fully and completely representative of the true populist mass sentiments of the left and right wing in the west.

Thus he started the war with the assumption that the wests reaction would be utterly minimal and inconsequential because
 1. Obviously the western left would utterly crucify any politician or national leader who would be seen to support super-duper evil and h*cking problematic diversity hating neo nazis or oppose anything labelled as #denazification, and furthermore the idea of being called a russiaphonic bigot would surely chill any criticism of russia in western media and social media.
 2. Obviously the right wing in the west is 110% fanatically pro russia and eager to have it as a mighty bastion against da globohomo and also because of muh based trad orthodox pill n sheeit which obviously is something extremely close to the hearts of conservative voters
 3. Obviously the western establishments and centre bloc would be utterly cowed by the left and right wing masses support of russia/hatred of da nazis enough for them not to take the opportunity to actively try to sanction a thorn in their collective balls for decades (and an active threat for two thirds a century beforehand) into the stone age
Clearly he also had a bunch of other assumptions about ukraine and how it would obviously not....ya know....fight back at all, as well as that his military totally wasn't a rotted out husk that had less combat effectiveness than Saddam's boys in the early 90s, due likely to the aforementioned "expert on the west" being one of several members of his inner circle who fed him nothing but the bestest good news about everything 24/7 to keep their cushy jobs and positions secure, which is something that has been observed with pretty much all dictatorships and autocracies which abruptly shat themselves to death at various points in history.

And since he gambled absolutely everything, economy, military, foreign relations, geopolitical status, long term strategy, on all these assumptions all being 100% true, he has absolutely no way out of the shitshow he made for himself since russia has utterly torched all these assets for a good generation going forwards, which is why he keeps feebly trying to double down and hope that all his assumptions magically come true within the next few weeks/months, as the alternative is literally getting Ceausescu'd at best and Gaddafi'd at worst at this point

imagine unironically naming your militia "somalia battalion" lmao
donbabwe + luganda indeed

//edit: i looked it up and they even have a wiki page:
The battalion took the name "Somalia" because, according to its former commander Mikhail Tolstykh (alias Givi), “its members are as fearless as Somalis”.
these vatniks are unironically simping for the most pathetic failed state in all of africa kek
really can't make this shit up

Let's take a break from laughing at Russian incompetence to gawk at some gay twitter drama

So about a month ago the Official Twitter Account of Ukraine released a video where they promise to fight "Ruscism" which is basically just a buzzword for the worst aspects of Russian society and history (state repression, slavish devotion to a leader figure, etc). Near the end they called out the Russians for claiming to be "stamping out fascism" when in reality fascism was defeated in 1945

Sounds reasonable, right? Well, today they released a new version with a few seconds cut out

The problem? The original included a picture of former Japanese Emperor Hirohito along with Hitler and Mussolini and this sent Japanese twitter into a Fukushima level meltdown

To be fair though, most of those twitter accounts did accept the Ukrainian apology, even if it is bullshit that we need to coddle their victim complex and revisionist delusions. I don't expect anything big to come from this, it was just an isolated drama incident I thought was funny

Looks like Ukraine is getting it's wish to start having more heavy shit shipped in. Learning a bunch of different systems will kinda suck, but common ammo standards is neat. If we're now starting to send them shit that they've never used before/need to be trained on, I wonder what else we'll send them? I mean Ukraine has been begging for more AA especially, and the UK is already in the middle of replacing our Rapier batteries with Sky Sabre, might as well let the Ukies lob em at the Russians instead of scapping them.

A thing to bear in mind, the gun systems across all three of these systems are basically the same thanks to the memorandum of understanding unifying most NATO artillery to 155mm calibre. The PZ-2000 has a couple of party pieces, but from what I understand the AS-90 and the M109 were fairly easy to crosstrain over.

I think the Italians will see how many M109s they can chuck out there as they have tonnes in storage and the americans are promising as many artillery shells as the Ukranians can apparently stomach.

AS-90s however, have various party tricks including getting everything ready while utterly buttoned up/closed down, Meaning within 60 seconds they can move into position, fire, and within 60 seconds again can fuck off to reposition rapidly, which is part of the UK's strategy when it comes to using SPGs.

The AS-90 also represents a serious force multiplier system, as it has all the fairly fancy bits and pieces like automatic gun laying and naviation etc etc.

What makes you think we be Commisars, we would be dead just like you my dear neolib. Its not love or self interest, its hate if you cant win destroy everything dear to enemy and leave him but ashes. If you cannot win Burn it all.
You think anyone that holds a different opinion than yours is a "neolib". You're just as empty headed as some bernie sanders voter that sees anyone to the political right of Jeb Bush as a Nazi.

You have to understand, the nips has their own version of rightoid and /pol/tards named Netto Unyoku. The difference is, unlike most /pol/tards, these nips are college-educated and/or middle class

if my only option was a "filtration camp, loss of passport and one way ticket to Sakhalin" I'd rather kill myself. Russians aren't big to let people flee to other parts of Ukraine or EU. Some tough choices there, Sakhalin or EU pass, free housing and bennies ... why the fuck people don't just choose to go to Sakhalin???

Putin was a globogoblin already, fuck knows what made him lose his shit and star a war for fuck knows what.

I don't know if this notion is widespread, I've watched this shitshow for a long while, so it seems pretty common sense to me. Otherwise, there are a lot of material, in the last 8 years, when Monke Tsar and one of the richest monkes, who is trying to get some respect and historical relevancy, legacy built.

Obama, in dig at Putin, calls Russia 'regional power'

THE HAGUE (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday called Russia a “regional power” that had seized part of Ukraine out of weakness rather than strength, in a dig at President Vladimir Putin.

Putin has tried to rebuild Russia’s prestige since the collapse of the Soviet Union and project Moscow as a strong player on the international stage.

Obama, who has had a cool relationship with Putin since he regained the presidency, dismissed that role during a news conference after a nuclear summit in the Netherlands that has been overshadowed by Russia’s annexation of Crimea.

“Russia is a regional power that is threatening some of its immediate neighbors, not out of strength but out of weakness,” Obama said.

this shit has been massaged by both Western and Russian media (and a whole lot by Ukrainians) for literally years, years worth salt mine.

In Memoir, Obama Calls Putin a ‘Ward Boss, Except With Nukes’

In A Promised Land, the first volume of a planned two-part memoir, former U.S. President Barack Obama comes across as fairly dismissive about many world leaders he met, likening Russian President Vladimir Putin to a Tammany Hall hack, deriding former French President Nicolas Sarkozy as full of “overblown rhetoric,” and saying the Chinese “were in no hurry to seize the reins of the international world order.”

Obama is also frank about his initial insecurities emerging on the world stage for the first time. “Was I prepared to be a world leader? Did I have the diplomatic skills, the knowledge and stamina, the authority to command?” he writes. He describes a trip to the Middle East during the 2008 presidential campaign, when he pushed a private prayer into the Western Wall that read in part, “Lord, protect my family and me. Forgive me my sins, and help me guard against pride and despair.”

He adds that someone then dug out the paper, and next thing he knew it was world news. “I had assumed those words were between me and God. But the next day they showed up in an Israeli newspaper before achieving eternal life on the internet. … The line between my private and public lives was dissolving; each thought and gesture was now a matter of global interest.”

Putin's ego has been shit on for many many years, all the while he thought of himself as one of the key world leaders. It's not just Obama who didn't think much of him, but Xi also snubbed him, as did Erdogan. The richest monke with no respect at all, but now everyone can't stop talking about it.

Motherfucker, every single time there are attempts to evacuate people in a direction different than some russian camp russians are shooting at evacuation busses, if civilians could leave they would, russian fucks won't let them.

Take your staged russian propaganda and made at gunpoint testimonials bullshit and shove it up your russian ass.
No komrade, Russia is true and honest and provided humanitarian corridors multiple times. It's the ukroswine that lie all the time!!11 they constantly put their military near civilians. Whatever our bombs touch - that's where their military was.

Just FYI, if they do offer free housing, then it's not every country. The rest - yeah.
Poland is autistically willing to go bankrupt paying people for housing Ukrainian refugees in their homes/apartments that would otherwise be for rent and also pays it's social security money to Ukrainians in Poland, long term it's going to become a disaster unless most of the refugees either go home or join the workforce.

You mean those corridors that begin in Ukraine and end in Siberia? Those are always open.

Russia is giving people three choices.
1. Be evacuated on russian terms, so forced eastwards resettlements/camps, likely lifelong slave labour in remote russian factories. It's what they've always done best.
2. Get murdered or worse for resisting/existing as an Ukrainian on occupied land.
3. Become a serf for russian overlords giving away 70% of your harvest for free or get drafted into 23rd Happy Cannon Fodder Brigade knowing if you say no your family gets no. 2'd one by one until your morale improves. Also remember to smile for the photo ops with the liberators.

Other choice? Evacuate on your terms, westward before russian horde shows up likely losing everything you've worked for all your life.

All shit choices, some risk staying, they all likely regret it in the end as once the horde arrives you don't get to evacuate or do fucking anything on your terms anymore.
