Jim Sterling / James "Stephanie" Sterling / James Stanton/Sexton & in memoriam TotalBiscuit (John Bain) - One Gaming Lolcow Thread

The funny thing is that Jim exclusively goes by they and he had multiple spergouts already about people assuming he wants to become female, so even that post "misgendered" him. These people deliberately set their identities up for you to cause offense, trying to placate them is a fool's errant.
Exactly.

Should be noted Jim's views are also on a slight downward trend, with only his recent rant about Elden Ring
Since I'm too lazy to search for it. What the fuck is the walrus has to say about ER? While I had problems with aspects of the game, it's a viable complete product that's worth the cost.

Is it so hard to just smile? Why is it always either the trademark smirk or soy face?
Social awkwardness, lack of real human interactions and a dash of autism is always my go-to answer. It's always amusing to see people like this, because just smiling takes so much less effort than dislocating your jaw and widening your eyes every time you're taking a photo with friends. When you see a man nearing 40 doing that in drag every photo he takes, though, it completely stops being amusing and it's just pathetic instead.

I never read this before, but its good satire and it's sad he lost that particular talent somewhere along the way; writing in a humorous tone. Now he's pandering and ass patting and overall being an annoying faggot. But that article shines as a good indicator of how things  could have gone for Jimbo.
Jim's best content was always his written content, not his videos, with the exception of scripts you can tell he spent a lot of time working on that were more editorial than news, and especially his reviews were always better content than anything else he did. I followed Jim originally for his written reviews and I understood his tastes, my own tastes, found his content fun to read. I could tell if he fucking hated something for X reason, then I would love it for that reason, if he loved it for Y reason I would hate it for that reason, and if he was a fan of it for Z reason I'd likely agree. Finding a good game reviewer to follow is about finding someone's whose tastes you understand and whose reviews you can stomach, and then adjusting for your own tastes. If someone hates games like Monster Hunter, and then hates a game because it is like Monster Hunter, I am going to like that game, because it is like Monster Hunter. Their negatives are my positives, that is kind of what the consideration of subjective opinion of another is all about. Understanding their position, then adjusting accordingly.

I also want to point out that the biggest issue Jim is having now days in his content is more complex than "it is late, samey, and filled with troon nonsense", the content changed in nature more than just from the topic of video games. The Jimquisition wasn't originally a news show, it was an editorial with a cheeky tone, a prewritten script, and a bit of a character injected into it. It wasn't about current news, but Jim's opinion on whatever topic was on Jim's mind that week. It wasn't journalistic content, that was what his written content was about, but rather whatever he wanted to talk about. Sure, it usually was something "current", but it wasn't about the event, it was about Jim's take on it. Jim's opinions, which were often a bit deeper than "thing good, thing bad", were the thing people watched for. He also gave some (often shallow) reasons for why he held such opinions, and would explore a topic and what it could mean in the wider scheme of things. The style of content was fundamentally different than what he is doing now, not only in tone and subject matter, but also nature. Now his content is more like a "gotta hit that algorithm dictated ideal length". They were a short form precursor equivalent to the modern video essay as often as they were discussing news. They could be a retrospective, or they could even be his input on a current industry trend in design and methodology, they might be his take on current discourse, or they might be his opinion on a particular event. If you were watching Jim back then, it wasn't to hear about the news, you were likely plugged in enough to know about everything as fast as it was happening, instead it was to see what he might say about the subject.

Let's go back in time. To before Digital Homicide, when Jim was new to the whole Patreon independent thing, and look at a random block of videos. These start at Mar 2, 2015, and go as far back as Jan 12, 2015.

In this segment we can see, working top to bottom, the following subjects:

  • Two videos on current discourse concerning then-current trends, that being games trying to be "cinematic", as if that was something for a video game to strive to be, instead of what worked best for video games, and how at the time it was more of an excuse to handwave things people didn't like, such as a 30FPS lock, a high abundance of cutscenes, a reduction in player control and agency, and a few other such things. The other was a discussion on games needing to be a certain length, a discussion that was sparked at the time by the release of The Order: 1886, and it's incredibly short run time of around IIRC 4-6 hours for a full priced AAA game.
  • A video discussion on the at the time major topic that was Peter Molyneux after yet another controversy, I think that was when he said he was going to quit making games after being put on blast for dropping the ball on previous promises yet again. I didn't give a fuck to rewatch it, as it was old news, and I can't remember which of 20 times it was.
  • A video on a subject on something Jim was positive about, that being how Hyrule Warriors did DLC, and wanting to see more games follow suit.
  • A video of Jim bitching about gaming corporate nonsense, that being Nintendo taking down videos of any YouTuber that didn't partner with them, and force them to only be positive about Nintendo products and give them a cut of all their ad revenue, whether or not it was from Nintendo related content.
  • A bit of a retrospective on things Jim likes in video games that we weren't seeing much of at that time, that being the Spencer Mansion from Resident Evil 1 after playing the then-recent remaster of the remake, and discussing how by being a well defined confined and limited space, which you had to navigate back and forth through, lead to you becoming familiar with it, as well as it becoming more memorable compared to the large openworld games being released at the time which were focused on creating a massive area, rather than a well designed small and intimate area, and the added difficulties with making a bigger map feel truly connected and have multiple memorable locales that feel like "coming home" when you replay them years later.
  • A discussion over the preorder nonsense that was Evolve before its release and the AAA preorder bullshit that was going on with it, and how the poor marketing, the aggressive pre-order monetization and culture of the time, and how it affected public perception caused quite a bit of damage to the game before it even came out.
  • Lastly there is a video of Jim tackling the Amiibo thing, looking at their in game benefits versus their collectable nature, and what it meant for the customers.

That gives us only 3.5 videos there that nicely fall into the very apt post made here, those being "Cinematic", "Nintendo Creator's Program Bollocks", "How Evolve Fell Down the Bullshit Tree", and a the half goes to "How Hyrule Warriors Does DLC Right", which out of eight videos is a bit better than 50%, but it is also worth noting they didn't have the same whiney tone that the newer videos have either. I couldn't tell you anything about Jim's recent videos, but I can say I didn't need to rewatch any of these videos here to write up that bit above, because I remember them from when they were new. Give me puzzles, but that speaks to how different things were.

Were any of these deep, insightful videos I'd encourage someone to go back and watch to really have some thoughts provoked? Fuck no, that run time, especially after accounting for opening gag, closing thoughts and gag, and standard padding is way too small for that, yet there is something to be discussed. You could start a discussion with these, there were thoughts and ideas being had, communication, something that I could agree or disagree with, something of some value to the discourse at the time. I am a believer in the sharing, discussion, and debating of ideas, no matter how petty the subject. I believe there should be proper, honest, open and serious discourse about all things as we communicate ideas, and these videos served as basically a "let me toss my forum post into the ring" tier input on whatever Jim felt like discussing at the time. They had some value to the discussion, a quick little chime in, then the next thing came about. The Jimquisition was for opinion pieces, it was an editorial.

A modern Jimquisition video has him just whining, focusing purely on whatever the issue of the week was when he start writing the script, and adds nothing to the discussion, nor to provoke discussion. It isn't Jim's opinions on the subject at hand that is being made the focus, it is Jim's slow reporting on the situation and his political opinions on it. He seeks not to add to the discussion, but to dictate it and talk over all others. He seeks not to make videos adding to the discourse of gamers, but to document and display evidence to justify his crusade. In that way, the name of his show has become quite fitting, has it not? It truly is his own zealous little inquisition.

These days the Jimquisition is trying, and failing, to be a slow sluggish news show fueled by the hatred and outrage of a deranged porn addicted man in a dress trying to look like a woman, yet screeching if you call him a man or a woman. Even if we ripped out all the troonery, the degeneracy, the constant outrage and anger. It still wouldn't be what it once was, for now under all of that it is trying to be a news show and a form of activism, not an editorial. It would still be losing viewers, maybe bringing in new ones, maybe even enough to outweigh the losses, but it would still be losing the old fans, as it is no longer what they subscribed for.

Oh, also, he had way more content back then. Seriously, look at how much he was putting out, there were multiple series going on creating a decent mix of different types of gaming content to watch, now he does nothing but his half assed Jimquisition videos on there, and yeah most of it was shit trend chasing BS, but you could at least tell Jim had anything at all to do with video games, rather than just giving his takes on that weeks gaming related trending topics on Twitter. Seriously, does Jim actually really play video games that much anymore? What are recent games he liked? Fuck, let's not even go that deep. What has he recently played? I honestly couldn't answer that question, let alone the games he likes.

What Jim does is the most baffling thing I've seen. You know the saying "If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck"? Well Jim takes that and changes the ending to be something else because since coming out as 'non-binary' he has only ever tried to present himself as a woman and when people look at this man constantly dressed as a woman they rightfully presume he's trans.

In fact Jim himself has been inconsistent on the topic because up until recently in his twitter bio he put that he was trans and non-binary something that should surely be mutally exclusive right? How can you be outside of the gender binary while transitioning to be the other gender? Now he's 'transfem non-binary' which is equally as dumb because being on either side of the masc-fem spectum must be you're not non-binary?

Something tells me Ezra Miller is a better wrestler than Jim. He wins his fights all the time.

I feel like Erza definitely picked his pronouns as a kind of psychic vampire move on anyone trying to talk about his crimes. I’ve seen idiots falling over themselves apologising for “misgendering” some dude who assaults women. Or this one American they/them lady who runs a cat sanctuary in Spain talking about how news reports calling this bog standard man “he” is why “non-binaries don’t trust the media.” Watch, we’ll find a Jack the Ripper letter where he proclaims himself to be beyond mortal mortal limitations like male and female, written in bloody semen, and people will argue the guy had less than privilege than the hookers he killed.

‘I’m a sex pervert who wants the clout of a transgendered woman‘ seems to be what Jim is all about ever since he trooned out.

And I bet he has the sex life of a nun. And not a trashy exploitation movie nun, I’m talking Call the Midwife cast member nun. Not Jenny Agutter, either.

After losing over 120k subs he would have to admit its not transphobes but his stale content hosted by a fat Troon
Are you kidding? Jim spent a majority of that <900k stream pretending transphobia is so rampant, deep, and accepted that it's legal to execute trans people in the streets and dump them in your community's local trans person mass grave.

Jim would be not only willing to believe that 120k are transphobic, but happy to do so since it means he's doing an even heckin' bigger activism by making videos about dumb-dumb capitalism oppressing his poor, downtrodden, universally celebrated by media and corporations, trans brothers, sisters, and whatever the fuck Jim is pretending to be.

I'm not fucking watching his dire bullshit drek. Find it yourself you lazy faggot, it involves him railing against "Git Gudism" or some shit from the clickbait title.

You could just said that it's Got Gud. Having that complaint against ER is more ridiculous than with Sekiro, because Sekiro forced you to play in a specific way while ER had a ton of known boss exploit a week after release.

But it's not really Jim content if it's not outdated retread of the same things he whined about 4 years ago.

That attitude can be really annoying and try-hard… but as someone who doesn’t even play Soul games, and isn’t really great at video games in general, does every experience have to be for literally everyone? Is it so bad for something to be for a particular audience? I’m all for people of all types having games to play, but does it have to be every game? You know who didn’t practise good gatekeeping? The Trojans. And look where it got them.

Short answer? No, of course not. Hobbies should be as accessible as possible to those interested in them but eventually some fuckwit turning up screeching about oppression and muh racisms over fucking video games needs being told to Fuck right off and quickly because they don't bring anything whatsoever worthwhile to the table. If they did, they'd make their own games that would be any good and not fodder for Jamais to do a Let's Sperg on.

@AngryTreeRat Quote bug due to long post, so...

Just to make sure I got it right, your argument is that Jim isn't losing subscribers just because "lolboring tranny", but because he fully surrendered to cheap, low-effort "topical" clickbait instead of talking about things he's actually interested enough in that he'll actually put in the effort for a proper script? Because you might just be right.
