Having an easy mode would also completely ruin the themes and story of the Dark Souls series.

The setting is meant to be a brutal and dark end of days where all the heroes and gods of old have died or gone mad and the natural order of the world is rotting and decaying, having it be a walk in the park kinda cheapens that.

The DS series is all about overcoming adversity. DS is very obviously a homage to the Berserk series in which the main character, who is often called "The Struggler" must defeat enemies and situations far greater than him. The whole idea of Hollowing, undead who have lost the will to live, is a meta-reference about the player. Whilst you continue to play the game your character is continuing to have a will and if you ever stop playing mid-way, that is your character going Hollow; They have "lost" the will to live and must wallow forever.

The entire game is about Humanity overcoming Gods, heroes, Dragons, and whatever else by sheer force of will and determination, anything can be done if you try and try again. In the lore, humanity was feared for this exact reason, so they had to be locked away or weakened (and that didn't even work). Another major narrative point is that death is important and without it, life becomes meaningless and devoid of value and anyone who tries to seek immortally in the series typically ends up fucked and all of the "good" characters typically sacrifice themselves at the end of their stories and they come to realize this.

This would all be spoiled by an easy setting. There would be no struggle, no overcoming difficult odds, no death,

Also the Sacrificial Twig in Elden Ring means that you can avoid the rune recovery loop entirely. But that would require preparation and planning, which is ableist according to Jim.

In Sekiro you don't have to retrieve anything after death and i like it a lot better. There's dragondrot mechanic which you can cure. You only loose half of the skill points if you haven't reached a full level yet, if you do , you don't loose anything, you never worry about souls or blood echoes.

Dark Souls felt like it had a lot of balancing issues and a weird difficulty curve, i'd actually argue that most of the second half of dark souls is a pretty garbage game although i still loved it as a whole but From has gotten a lot better and that, each game after DS2 has felt more polished with less tedious bullshit.

Stanley Parable is the kind of game you can get the full experience of by just watching a no commentary longplay. I would think that in the age of let's plays and twitch streamers game devs would figure out that if you can experience the entire game by watching someone else play it, it won't sell.

You need the gameplay footage to be the hook. That's what sold me on basically every game I play, watching someone else play and thinking "wow I want to experience this".

This, and the person talking in a video to be funny. Or at the very least entertaining. Or at the very, very least charismatic in the slightest. I've whittled down my subscribes to people like Sseth, Mandalore, Accursed Farms, Ahoy, Civvie, Grim Beard etc - because they put a lot of effort into their videos and their scripts, and they are all likeable dudes. It also helps that with each channel I mentioned I've seen games that look great, and have then been great to play, so I can largely trust what they have to say on the subject in future. So I stay subscribed and watch their next video.
It's really a very simple formula, I don't know why Jim never grasped it.

As a side note I used to really like Superbunnyhop as well, he used to make good reviews. But a parallel problem happened with him in that he just became fucking boring, and now barely even uploads.

I'm glad ya brought this up, as it shows Jimbo's change in morals and worldview over the years. It was his moral position because, at first, it was about greedy individualism or corporate greed (these are hardly revolutionary talking points, but most moral stances aren't held for originality). The idea was "if I'm going to make enough to make a living from this, then I can at least let you watch this without being supported by advertisers."

Where things get dodgy is that he'd claim to hate having to shill for products just to make ends meet. Fair enough, but what makes this sketchy is that he claims this to be the reason he left the Escapist, instead of them refusing to censor/take a side in the "Zoe Quinn's Sex Favors" arc. As someone who actively ignored all that spergery, I didn't learn any of this for a few years, and promptly didn't care.

Then came the Digihom lolsuit. This was the time when Jim would start to pivot from "greedy people" to "the enablers". In his eyes, not entirely unjustified either, Valve was the reason so many crap games on steam flooded the market. The problem with this mindset is Jimbo became more and more susceptible to thinking "if this entity did this one thing, then this problem wouldn't exist". Or, when you think the system is more of a problem than the people, you start striving for a utopia where the problem can never happen while failing to address the mindsets creating the problem.
