There seems to be a lot of research on social contagion, much showing that it spreads like an infectious disease: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s40435-016-0271-9Conversely, I can say that bulimia appears to be a social contagion*, without insinuating that I want to send every bulimic person to a work camp in Siberia.
*because it was basically non-existent until it was first described in a single patient in the 1970s, and is at least partially spread through support groups that expose struggling people to each other and allow essentially memetic spread of the idea. Seriously the story of bulimia as a disease inadvertently caused by the psychology industry is really interesting and I feel very relevant to trans identities
