The kids who grew up with social media practice about as much infosec as their boomer grandparents. Apparently only those who grew up in web 1.0 learnt the value of not attaching your virtual shit to your actual identity.
because there was a separation between the internet and real life that was purposefully destroyed by facebook and twitter to try and maximize the amount of data they can collect and it happened right before the amount of people on the internet increased by like 100x so pretty much the only people that remember the separation were people who were using the internet before 2008, and that was a comparatively tiny fraction of people compared to everyone else on the internet

it also doesnt help that early web 1.0 was mostly nerds larping as hackers and furries so the culture of the internet was based around secrecy for a while

I think this is a sign of things to come relating to the future of the farms. As social media and places like reddit become more sanitized, people will start to look for places like the farms. This serves as a double sword, on one side the community grows and on the flip side the same community gets a surge of people who think this place is like reddit or think this will be their new secret place for (insert degeneracy).

I usually am against gatekeeping in certain things, but in the case of the farms I'm all up for it or at least make the registration process in such way where they Have to see the FAQ before interacting with anything.

It's like how everyone on 4chan says "go back to reddit" when the whole site is reddit refugees and has been since the late 2010s.
I disagree that it's all reddit refugees - I posted on 4chan a lot in the early days of it and come back to it occasionally - never posted on reddit. And as 4chan is an anonymous sort of place there'd be no way to know this for certain either way.

Reactions: Dork Of Ages
it's more just shockingly bad posts that makes me think many of them are not 18.
An easy "age verification" that would be practical but not require dox would be to have them write their intended username and a timestamp on something like a pack of cigarettes you need to be 18 to legally purchase. Then submit that picture for account approval. This will quickly weed out the lowest-effort, most-retarded, and least socially adept underage people. Sure it can be worked around but then it serves as a reminder to the people that would lie about their age anyway that they need to at least attempt blending in. Anyone with something worthwhile to submit can easily get this done pretty much globally, the tobacco companies price them to always be affordable in local currency, and they know it isn't a simple grift to make money. Shit the info needed would fit on a $1 Swisher's wrapper. Sorry for the late response I wanted to think on it and make sure I wasn't missing major flaws.

Registration quiz, proof of age, having to lurk x amount of time before being able to sign up... all of this is gay af.
It's an internet drama forum not an application to the NASA.

You don't need to send a picture of your foreskin to show it's still attached or to show a timestamp with the color of your skin (like black people twitter)

There is nothing really you could do about that to combat that. Generally speaking it is up to the newfag to integrate or just stay in one place to act like a faggot. It's a hit or miss especially with the uptick of faggotry from somewhat prominent lolcows and happenings that people are thoroughly invested in.
I disagree, I believe that the purpose of a jannies should be to integrate new (or old) users, and to make sure that a thread is readable with lots of worthless rageposting and political spering is purged. One thing that I think Somethingawful did correctly is the 'User was banned for this post' as well as the public record of someones suspensions and bans. Whether for better or worse, the moderation staff of that site were able to drive out the elements they did not want, or at least made them submit and act in the ways they want. While I think obviously the rules there are gay and the place sucks for sure, if these tools were used by a moderation staff that had their heads in the right place, I think that this community could be brought back in line with what it was intended to be. While I understand that @Null is a free speech absolutist, and I think that's admirable, every thread should not be a outlet for someone to just go on and on about their ideals. It should also not be a bastion for people to A-log, because it is very bad for the health of the site in many ways. Negative sentiment towards the site has been increasing because, to be fair to the people who don't like this site, a lot of the posts here are just needlessly nasty, hateful, and totally pointless. Posts in a specific lowcows thread should be pointed directly at them and their personal behavior, and should be intended either to be additive towards the discussion of the person, or intended to make the read laugh, even if it is unsuccessful in doing so.

we have 30* staff and half of them are MIA. This number has been consistent for like 4 years. We can barely keep our reports under 30 at any given time and finding new mods sucks because it always creates drama and then it feels like being staff drives good users out of the community very quickly.

Yeah, I've always seen this trend among modern kids. They put everything on the table, "in true boomer fashion" like an user said some time ago.
When I was a teenager, I've posted in many forums, but no user of sane mind (me included) ever thought about using his real name, and even less using his true fucking face as an avatar.
I know I sound like a disgruntled boomer, but KIDS THESE DAYS have grown up with sites like Facebook, that encourage them to put every personal info they can online. Of course, the results are catastrophic: doxxing them is trivial, you just have to look for their true name on Google and you'll surely find a page, somewhere, where they've written their true name, all of the usernames they have used, links to their accounts on a shitload of sites, etc.
After all, "digital native" doesn't mean "clever": it just means that you're born with a fuckin tablet in your hands, not that you know how to use it and how to behave online.

Holy shit based.

I hate it when boomers think that "digital native" zoomers are "good with computers". All they know is how to play videogames lol, anything slightly more complex and they can't do shit.

I used to volunteer for a Boys and Girls club and the amount of pre-teens that lack basic computer knowledge was revolting. No wonder these idiots can't do the most basic of op-sec, like you said.
