But I'm reading the Rolling Stone article about parents of "trans kids" and it's really quite unnerving, and not in the way that was clearly intended. (Btw Tony, it's the mother of the "trans kids" who says "I didn’t want to talk to anyone. I didn’t want to know anyone. I didn’t want anyone to know me.")

For instance, here's "Violet", the mother of two "trans kids":

Families of trans kids in states across the U.S. have increasingly begun relying on parent networks as they struggle to make impossible decisions about their future. Many of these groups are forced to meet in secret — whether in members-only Facebook groups or at undisclosed locations — to ensure their children are not harmed.

Obviously the troons will say this is "just like the Jews under the Nazis!" or whatever. But to me it just sounds (and I don't say this lightly!) like pedophiles. Not having heard of Hart before, it's not entirely clear from the most obvious sources whether she really thought herself to be a man (usually my cut-off for personal interest in these people). Most popular history articles written in recent years obviously go along with "amazing transman Alan Hart" but it doesn't take much research to find an interesting source that says something different.

In his 1976 book Gay American History, which is available (with an account) on the Internet Archive, Jonathan Katz includes a patient history written by psychiatrist J Allen Gilbert of Hart, followed by Katz's own commentary. The whole section runs pages 258-279, and Katz's commentary is the last three pages of that. I've nothing to add myself, but it's interesting enough to be worth quoting Katz's comments in full.

Dr. Gilbert's account raises many issues. First, despite the confusion of Dr. Gilbert and [Hart] herself about her sexual nature, [Hart] is clearly a Lesbian, a woman-loving woman. Dr. Gilbert's final statement that [Hart] is now married to a “normal” woman would be laughable if one did not know the difficult preceding history. The marriage involves two women, one of whom has had a hysterectomy and passes for a male—two women living and loving together, two Lesbians.

Despite Gilbert's comment about an “abnormally” large clitoris (the same value judgment made about Lucy Ann Lobdell in the early 1880s), Gilbert’s physical examination is not reported to have revealed other than a perfectly formed, if not “average” female. It is also clear from Gilbert's report that [Hart] does not identify herself as of the male gender. She does not wish to possess a male body; she wants to play “the role of a male,” not be male. It is not the male’s penis she covets, but the male’s socially given power. Her decision as a young girl to be the “man” in the family expressed her wish to care for and take care of her own mother, another woman. In order to do this she “regarded herself as a boy’—but only in the sense of “wanting pockets on her clothes” (a poignant sign of “masculinity” mentioned twice by Dr. Gilbert), in wearing short hair and trousers, in playing boys’ games, in reading adventure stories and fantasizing herself as the romantic, dashing hero, in hating housework and “small talk,” in being inquisitive about the world, an active, “obstinate, independent child,” in having “masculine ambitions,” in loving and wanting to be loved by another female.

Clearly, too, [Hart] could only perceive her own situation in the world in heterosexual terms, according to the traditional heterosexual model of male-female husband-wife relations. She found no alternative, no way of transcending this socially dominant model.

According to her report, [Hart] had “no thought of shame” about her first active Lesbian relations. Shame came later, she says; it was learned—from such sources as medical textbooks in which she read about her “true condition.” It is noteworthy that this shame only came to her as an adult; so prevalent and widely accepted today is the idea that all important feelings are acquired and set in childhood. It is noteworthy, too, that if her analysis with Dr. Gilbert did not itself create her feeling of shame about Lesbianism, it clearly intensified it. This story represents one more example of the pernicious treatment of Gay people by the medical profession. [Hart] entered therapy to cure a specific, minor phobia; she ended by having a hysterectomy.

It is precisely the late-created shame [Hart] felt, and her analysis itself, that motivated her request to be sterilized. Since there was obviously no liklihood of [Hart] becoming pregnant, her desire to be sterilized clearly expresses her need to neutralize guilt about Lesbianism, to legitimize for herself her socially unsanctioned relations. Despite her active Lesbian career, [Hart] apparently still needed to come to terms with feelings about the impropriety of two women having sex. Although her hysterectomy was in a sense voluntary, the social pressures to which she was subjected suggest that in another and just as true sense it was socially coerced. Notable also is the complicity here of an even rather benign, sympathetic, undogmatic psychiatrist in his patient's own strange move to be sterilized—a move that may be characterized as justification by punishment, a psychic ploy Gay people have sometimes in the past adopted to legitimize themselves. There is a macabre irony in this not unkind doctor's falling readily into the sadistic role offered him by his patient.

The story of [Hart] illustrates only too well one extreme to which an intelligent, aspiring Lesbian in early twentieth-century America might be driven by her own and her doctor's acceptance of society’s condemnation of women-loving women.

The vast majority of the pushback against TRAs has been done by women, mostly "normal" non-politician women working behind the scenes. And a lot of it started in the UK, where the religious conservative movement doesn't exist in the same way that it does in the US.

But most TRAs can't conceive of that; women who don't worship troons are just being brainwashed and led by the "religious right" and having their dumb female heads filled with naughty ideas by far-right conservatives.
