like i said, pre-kyle archives are shit because he does like one prank call a year and most of the time its him trying to entertain co-hosts who are too busy looking at their phones/laptops to join in on the fun. honestly you could just make an entire 2010s era adult swim show just based on his rantings. just imagining going to the gym or subway or detroit and its exactly like it is in his insane rants.

the reason mike's prank calls work vs LPC or crankyankers is that its just straight up not fun or cute. there is no whimsy, mike's more of a comical psychological horror, like cartel execution videos where its just outside of our reality but still plausible. he's not playing a character, outside of being a slightly more absurd version of a nasty jewish customer.

like a quick phonecall mike does at a resturant he's a dick but not outside of your average karen and he just keeps ramping it up until he's telling people to burn in hell and get raped or whatever. I think the best simple way to talk about that is when he calls this gym over christmas and the person says "happy holidays" and he rudely tells her Hanukkah is over and she clearly means christmas and as a jew he's offended by that and later on accuses her of antisemitism and being racist because she won't tell him about the whereabouts of a black coworker. he's just straight up telling people off or ruining people's careers.

like in a recent episode he talks to a bartender and again everything the employee says is wrong but its plausible. there's one on youtube about him finding someones camera and then deleting their photos while on the phone with the person, and its great because of that edge of reality to it. thats why the premise can sound boring but it turns out good, like him calling a restaurant to ask if they still carry an item, because he's always such an asshole it takes what would be a boring quick call and transforms it into 10 minutes of madness.

there was this old video of him calling popeyes for their thanksgiving deal and its just like i said, he just goes full obnoxious rude jew. the employees can't speak right, they don't say the right info, they don't follow SOP, they fuck up and he just calls them out all over. on the rare times he doesn't get one over on someone its because the other person on the line is cool, collected, and does their job properly.

something that is great about redbar is that its blatantly sadistic, he will just go off on everything from store chains, to youtubers to employees for everything they do wrong. like on the 2010 marathon show on the archive he's talking about service merchandise and its insane how he describes it. mike is also the greatest describer ever, better than any book because his stream of consciousness gives a better picture than anything from any novel, you know what he's talking about despite you never going there. the low quality ads, the weird sales, the outlay of the store, the employees, the bizzare array of items, the awful gimmicks and the terrible merchandising, "its like they found the items in an alley and decided to just sell it to you" "anything you can fit in a bucket $20"

Also lol I forgot in the one I posted where he calls the church, she calls him sir and he immediately chastises her for using incorrect pronouns and says he’s a woman, which in addition to everything you said is the sort of shit that makes his prank calls and the show in general so good.


Re: the fact that the archives have so much shit in them and how it’s uncharted territory, like I said in another post, it’s bizarre how little info there is on Mike online if you try to google, or maybe I’m just not digging deep enough, but it seems like there’s really not much out there aside from like a popular Reddit post about his duck tales song and his racist Obama impression. You’d think he’d be more well known and despised, like, cum town is way more popular but even when they first started they immediately had tons of blog posts and insane woke scolds on Twitter who were trying to cancel them with every little thing they could and really they still haven’t said anything close to the shit Mike has said over the years. I’m just surprised there’s not some YouTube documentary, like Porsalin style about Redbar which I would have thought people would start making when he took a year off. Maybe he’s attempted it but there’s just so much shit to go through and so much lost footage that it wouldn’t make for an actual comprehensive documentary or video.

Also, just wondering if anyone knows what’s up with Todd Detter, I’ve heard him mentioned by Mike and Jules offhand a bunch of times and in comments, I know he’s the guy who measured Dave landau, but it seems like later they had some problem with him or vice versa. I’m just curious because I’ve seen him mentioned so many times and I can’t find any info about what happened or if it was even anything significant. It might just be some silly, petty drama, but I just assumed it was significant because of how often they’ve mentioned him and how often I’ve seen comments that refer to him cryptically, and in a way that the people responding also seem to be in the know about.

a lot of it comes down to marketing, mike was so close to being in the right place at the right time only to fuck it up. he switched from being one of the first twitch streamers to some other lesser known site, he almost ended up on mark maron's podcast before kyle destroyed his life, etc.

Mike says repeatedly even in the beginning no one gives a fuck about you in entertainment unless you are in NYC or LA, and despite the set backs i bet he would 100% ended up a major guy if he did fuck off to those places 20 years ago.

like when you talk about cumtown, thats mostly marketing, they were friends with chapo and a bunch of other people who lead to them getting articles and other astroturfing to make them famous quick. stav was working for vox, nick thought catelog and one of the chapos was working for buzzfeed and another person slate.

beyond that so much of mike's stuff has been deleted because of its content, mike was a legit e-celeb with the top podcast on podcast alley and top 20 on itunes, he was close to getting 100k on youtube just from his clips back in 2016. but its content meant it vanished quick.

mike's redbar wikia was pretty detailed too, but because of how people quit listening or because of mike's litigeous nature or long breaks it vanished.

as for why there isn't a doc, its probably because he'd sue. simple as. also mike learned not to reveal too much true information after the first 3 "lost years" of the pod. most of his doc wouldn't be that eventful. plus he tells so many obviously fake stories that it would be idiotic to try to make one about his real life. even doing a summary of his years of the show. its hard to get into a comprehensive doc because there isn't much going on, above all else its just a NEET trolling people and getting into online wars. you can't really make a video interesting about a guy talking about boogers for a year.

Just heard confirmation of Mike’s height in an early 2013 episode, which seems like a big deal given all the speculation in this thread. He says he’s 5’10” and a half, lol. 165 pounds at the time.

Also it’s crazy to me that he used to stay in rented houses with listeners and partied with them before and after live shows. Seems like the last thing he’d want to do now.

To Kramer’s point above, I’m willing to bet Mike is bummed this thread exists and is somewhat terrified to mention it or this site on the show, despite how kiwi farms the show’s subject matter has become. Isn’t this the biggest collection of redbar information on the internet? At only 25 pages, that’s not saying much, yet it says a lot because yeah, it’s hard to find anything on Mike or the show on the internet. The thread was started while the show was on a year long hiatus. It also doesn’t help that both subreddits got shut down which had a bunch of old information.

But really he isn’t that interesting. He has a show where he currently just riffs off of shitty topical YouTube clips and rewinds/pauses them every 5 seconds to avoid copyright infringement/lawsuits. Some of his rants actually make me laugh out loud which I can’t say about anything else really. I push through the 6-8 hours of fluff for the 1 minute gems.

Dean was a depressed dude who lost all his construction money and was barely making a living and wanted to avoid living with his mom yet spent all his free time working for Mike for free. After everything with Katie Schuster it seems that he moved back to Chicago, quit comedy and is just doing his own thing with his old friends. I don’t know if Mike would actually hate the fact that the thread exists, seems like most people in here actually really like the show, or they’re like Kramer, who seems to be a long time fan who legitimately enjoys aspects of it and also has good faith criticisms of the various incarnations of the show and . And then there’s a few people who shit on him, seems like for the most part because he’s Jewish and they hate Jews, and then others who seem to know way too much about the show which leads me to believe they were maybe fans at one point and got shit on by Mike, or took it personally when he made fun of people they like and became obsessed with hating him and try to post like gotchas or situations where Mike is supposedly being hypocritical, like a while ago someone dramatically posted pics of some of the merch designs, accusing him of blatantly ripping off other brands or designs, when that was literally the point and isn’t even like ethically or ‘artistically’ questionable.. I didn’t think anyone would ever have a problem with a comedy podcast selling merch that basically parodies other famous clothing designs.

People have mentioned this before in this thread, but can you even consider Mike to really be a lol cow, like, at the very least, compared to every other podcaster, Mike is extremely principled and sticks by the things he’s said for years, like refusing to advertise on the podcast, even the free ones, having his own site where he hosts the streams, not going through Patreon or whatever for Scar club, etc. I’ve seen someone post some screenshot of him sort of shilling ‘Me Undies’ or whatever years ago, but it was just like a Facebook post saying ‘hey I know this is annoying, but I wear these and if you happen to buy them already, here’s a discount code’ which i personally don’t give a shit about, it’s not like he would ever bring it up on the show, or at least I can’t imagine him doing it, but I’ve only really seen stuff from like 2016 to now.

Also, it goes without saying, but he clearly doesn’t give a fuck about trying to suck up to people for clout or whatever, he couldn’t even resist not talking shit about everyone else at Compound Media *during* the like 10 weeks he was at Compound which basically got him fired.

I guess there’s certain things you could argue that he’s done that you personally find lame or inconsistent, or I’m sure the people who have been listening to him for a long time will know of stuff that I don’t know of, but just looking at the rest of the people who have threads under this sub forum, he doesnt come anywhere CLOSE to their level of cow-ness. I personally wouldn’t consider him a lolcow at all and not just because I’m a fan of his, I just can’t see how anyone could think that Mike is comparable to literally anyone else with their own threads here, or at least any of the people I know of. Besides like, *maybe* Sam Hyde, but even then, I feel like he’s so much more of a lolcow than Mike, for more ‘objective’ reasons and more subjective things that I think Sam does that I find cringe, which is almost all of the shit he’s done post World Peace.

I used to be a fan of Dick Masterson and The Dick Show, enough to throw him five bucks a couple times to hear bonus episodes, so hearing him interviewed in a fucking 2008 episode of Redbar was pretty mind blowing. Mike already reminded me of Dick on certain levels, in other ways they’re very different, but since then I’ve wondered if Dick became a listener and was influenced by Mike and his show. I’ve noticed some parallels, like Ducktails / Dick tales, similar format, other things I can’t recall now, but anyway that’s the end of that train of thought.

Sometimes it works and you're down with the entire riffing, sometimes you get lost somewhere along the way. The nature of the long format radio thing in a sense. Redbar does better than most other guys doing that format, if you can even point to many anymore. Cumia does what 3 hours max? Redbar would do that minimum.

Not sure if you're aware but there's a new drama streamer that Redbar has given a bit of a blessing to, he spoke about him on a recent stream but I've heard that the guy is in his Bring Back Group on facebook. His name is Salvo Pancakes on youtube, he does drama content and goes after more youtube sort of guys and not comedians, but he definitely takes a lot of inspiration from redbar and it shows and is not tacky about it.

Lmao, is this the guy that he was talking about who he said makes good shorts, I think he said he made one about h3? id seen that Tipster guy once somehow and he seemed insufferable, but I commend this guy, I can see the Redbar influence. I was imagining for a bit how fun and easy it would be to do a Redbar style stream shitting on the streamers who orbit like Destiny and the commentary Youtubers like Augie and Tipster, etc. so I’m glad this guy is doing it. There’s specific people tho that are niche enough that I’m somehow aware of and despise that are more like ‘drama’/‘politics’ streamers that I hope he starts going after.

i was going to post that, but the interview sucks. it is hilarious how Mike accidentally destroys the interview by forcing dick to talk about blacks and jews and dick just backpedals hard. you think thats funny, a little later on Mike gets an interview with Shadman. also Mike's views on incest and little girls at the time means its a bit different from normal interviews.

if you really want to be in for a thrill. Mike basically was an obsessive fan of the guy who would eventually start Epic rap battles and basically gives him the career advice that would later make him famous. Mike's handful of TJ miller interviews was good as well just for historic info on that guy's rise to fame, the Kong:Skull island guy was TJ Miller's camerman for all his viral videos and the entire reason that movie even exists is technically because of TJ miller.

Mike really has a knack for finding future infamous/famous people and associating with them.

I skipped around a bit and got to S13E01 yesterday, which is the first officially labeled season. Can’t tell if the show hits a lul in 2014 or if I’m just getting burned out on it, but I’m leaning toward the former because of Mike’s self admitted brain fog and the constant health talk, plus some of the funniest episodes yet were in 2013. Looking back at the episode list I did skip quite a bit. I guess I’m getting impatient/antsy to be done with this little excursion. I should have been bookmarking my favorites. Oh well.

Anybody have thoughts on Othy Schwering? The episodes he cohosted on were actually pretty good and free flowing, except his last appearance of course, which is easily a top 5 most awkward moment of oldbar by the way. That said there’s no doubt in my mind that Othy would be a well known lolcow had he continued to do his late night show. There’s still a few episodes on YouTube if anyone is curious.

Ugh, 20 minutes in and Jules has already talked over Mike several times and suggested a clip. Then she interrupted him setting up a clip to ask if he was going to pull it up. And why does he always have to search for the link? Why are they always discussing time stamps? Can’t she do her fucking job?

Also, apparently I was wrong about livestreams being free even though he's said it many times on the show. Maybe you just have to be logged in and don't need to be scars, but you can't watch it if not logged in now. Here's a link.
