Wilson was willing to join the war on the side of the Entente, how come did he try to end the war via mediation with America as a neutral party? But he wanted his legacy to be one as a peacekeeper, therefore also trying to take control of the Versailles peace treaty negotiations and failing utterly to contain british and french vengeance upon the central powers, and instead sulkingly creating his League of Nations shit.
Wilson was pushed into the war though because Wall Street bet hard on the Entente. John Morgan Jr. was a massive anglophile like his father, and pushed basically all the banks and business interests in the US to side with the Entente. The influence was strong enough that the founder and CEO of Goldman Sachs got pushed out of his own company by the board because he sympathized with the central powers as a person of german jewish descent.
Wilson and Wall Street knew well that if the Entente lost, it would mean massive economic losses for the US, while a entente victory would lead to a economic boom.
When the february revolution happened in 1917, and it began to seem likely that Russia would seek peace with Germany, it became a immediate problem for the US as it became a possibility that the central powers could win, and two months later the US would officially join the war.

I don't agree with a lot of Wilson's policy decisions, but he was quite often a victim of circumstance. I didn't know playing Devil's Advocate for historical figures that may not be bad as modern academia makes them out to be counted as "simping."
