Twitter and it's clones will always be shit heaps. They will inevitably devolve into echo chambers of retardation and witch burnings by the very nature of the platforms appealing to oversocialized types, who will cannibalize each other when no external pressure by an 'other' is put on them. I'd argue the Fediverse is in fact worse than Twitter, as at least twitter seeks to remove the worst elements of the platform to make sure it is marketable to mainstream society. And those mainstream types can help balance out the insanity of the oversocialized types, even if in the long run they can't out compete them. With the Fediverse, most everyone on the platform is not a mainstream type, as you will have likely been in "dissident" politics for some years and heard about it from other non mainstream types. The owners of the instances will also be oversocialized types, with no interest in mainstream attention, and have no incentive to remove negative elements from the instance. Whether or not you prefer Mastodon or Poast depends on what side of "dissident" politics you prefer. Either way, it would not surprise me in the slightest if Mastodon and other liberal instances have very similar problems to Poast and Chudbuds. The types of people on there are the same.
