Try to think like a psychopath. Schools are the perfect target for people that have grievances against society and don't want to die peacefully. Killing children is one of the last taboo things left in Western society so the shock of doing it assures that it will garner attention. Children are unable to defend themselves from attack and generally aren't wise enough to know when to run. Gun free zones create a scenario where you can roughly estimate how much time you have free reign before armed resistance arrives. All these factors almost guarantee a certain degree of success for a spree killer.
