but isnt what youre both describing just "post-irony"sorry i dont mean to be a pedantic retard, just trying to understand.
No you're actually right.

My brain did not notice the second post in post-post irony

I think the term does not exist.

My flimsy guess for what post-post irony is would be.

you being ironic but people believing you're honest.
and
you being sincere but people believing you're ironic

maybe?:\

All these flavors of irony are cover for the fact that jokes are not immaculately conceived and often are a subrosa demonstration of what you truly believe.

Carlin made jokes about white people being bad and black people being cool. Well, he also believed in that sincerely. Which is why he’s heralded as a great thinker by people who take comedy too seriously (but also cry foul whenever someone critical of comedians does it).

I think the term irony is like sarcasm. which is to say, its used incorrectly and as a catch-all for anything that is more nuanced than a knock knock joke. But to be fair, entertainers dont do themselves any favors when they put out hours of content per week of them shooting the shit and not staying in or out of character. I am a new sam hyde fan and way outside of his demographic. did other people use the term post-ironic for him, or did he use it first?

It's funny because it's self referential, self aware, breaks the forth wall, addresses his critics and fans, and acknowledges the MDE cannon - which he very rarely has ever done. It was also part of an extended bit he improvised live after spending all day on set for World Peace 2. If you don't think it's funny you have to admit it's impressive. It's an absolutely perfect example of the post-post-irony that made MDE and Sam relevant in the first place.

I think it means sincerity masked as irony, where you say something you actually mean, but in a way that makes it sounds like you must be joking.

Atleast that's how a lot of people see Sam's humor. I think it's probably true that he does that a lot, I just don't know where the line is with him and I think it's possible he's just as likely to say over the top things just for the hell of it sometimes.

It's when you mix sincerity and irony.

Because the 2 are mixed, the line is muddled and it's hard to see what's sincere or a joke.

Take this from his ted talk as an example. (he's talking about the future in 2070)

It's a joke and an exaggeration but you can feel he tries to say something about racial tensions and white people losing patience and not wanting to be the anvil anymore.
(if you think he's right/wrong or deep/shallow about it then it's something else entirely. I am just talking about the subtext)

i.e. it's not actually funny (or even a joke at all), but we'll pretend it is so we don't seem out of the loop

Sam's humor isn't complicated. He doesn't give a pig's ear about how well a joke is received (him and Nick have talked about how much Sam loves bombing doing standup) and he knows his audience. Sometimes his jokes/bits land, sometimes they're just trash, plain and simple.

thats completely incorrect. Sam has repeatedly said that his stand-up performances are specifically for the audience watching the recording of the reaction of the crowd. The bit is that he provokes the audience in the room to sperg out and then makes fun of their outrage for the enjoyment of his actual audience. He has literally said that his random faggot facts bit were not jokes in and of themselves and that all the heckling from the self satisfied hipsters is what made it funny.

His humor is apparently complicated enough to confuse you lol. Comments like yours and a lot of the questions his viewers send him to answer on air indicate that he has a contingent of fans who are straight up retards.

Was watching Sam shit talk David Lynch on a recent stream and the half assed reasons for why he disliked his work (some halfhearted shit about it being weird for the sake of weird) reminded me he has that 4chan contrarian streak. The type of guy to say he hates the Beatles because he thinks it's provocative and different. Even the chat which dickrides Sam hard were pointing out his bullshit.

So whens the next PGL coming out? Been a while since the Adam Friedland episode, god I miss Nick's jokes.

Sam seems to have this opinion on so many things, to the point where I just disregard it. In his skits or old Kickstarter he makes good humour of his cynicism, but him sitting there sharing his criticisms on stuff is just not very helpful to anyone.

Listen dood, you just repeated what I said but waffled on unnecessarily.
Consider the following: why not pretend to be an astronaut with a plastic bag?
Cunty defensiveness when someone dares to correct your retarded comments. I didnt bother to repeat any of your brilliant insights that "some joke get laugh some joke get no laugh".

You said he doesn't give a "pigs ear"(lol retard) about how well a joke is received. Again, thats not true and I'm sorry to have to be the one to explain this to you in a public forum.

Sam has never expressed a cavalier attitude about how his audience (not random assholes who he is mocking, his AUDIENCE) receives his comedy. If anything he is overly precious about his bits and he has discussed this at length with Nick. He also has said he hates doing stand-up and that its stressful because he is relying on anger and confusion to get the footage he needs.

Nice temper tantrum response though. I guess I'd feel humiliated too if I had to have something as simple as sam hyde tolling explained to me.

I'm interested in hearing this take. I personally dont like to watch Lynch movies because they kind of make me feel nauseas and disturbed- but thats why he is such a brilliant filmmaker. If Sam was just expressing his preferences with respect to entertainment then I think thats reasonable. But for shows like WP and Tim and Eric, Lynch is such a clear influence that I think I have heard both shows described as Lynchian in a complimentary sense.

The issue Sam has is he is exceedingly outspoken about his hate for things but often has no actual knowledge of what he's attacking. He'll passionately say he hates David Lynch or Dreamworks movies but hasn't seen either in 20+ years. It's the same when he said riding a motorcycle is for suicidal people in KSTV 1 and he now owns several or how he said gambling is for low IQ retards but he literally took out 100k+ debt to buy Bitcoin. The guy talks out of his ass. He'll read a point on twitter and then parrot it nearly word for word. I love MDE but no one should take advice from Sam. The guy contradicts himself and talks out of his ass all the time.

Him and Nick were shitting on Porsche owners and how gay they are one PGL episode, a month later he comes out with a Porsche.

He has a great ability to talk with authority on things he knows nothing about.

Sam will judge something by its fanbase and culture more than the content itself. If the fans are gay and cringe he'll dismiss it entirely. There's usually not much else to it. When someone asks him if he likes [insert mainstream media] he reacts to the cultural impact and obsessive fanbase that comes with whatever movie or show he's "reviewing".

Look at his critique on Breaking Bad. He hates the show but hasn't seen it and never will. He knows it's an incredibly hyped up reddit soy show, with funco pops and conventions and that's all he really thinks about when someone mentions the show. It's hard to enjoy something when every atheist redditor is in your ear like, "whattt dude you've never seen Breaking Bad the best show of all time!!!"

[Insert picture of a fat Mexican man wearing a bright yellow Pollo Hermanos shirt and a Super Mario hat side hugging a big titted voice actress at some random con.]

I watched BB when it was still new and I personally love the show, spinoffs and lore etc but there are some movies and shows that I've never seen and will never be able to enjoy because the fanbase has hyped it up too much. I've never watched an episode of Rick and Morty and I'm never going to and I don't like the show because their fanbase is fucking gay.

It says a lot that people would pay money to ask Sam how he feels about an incredibly famous director like David Lynch. What is there for him to say that hasn't already been said by actual film critics? I'd rather ask Cole Smithey. It was cool when people were sending Sam their own art and music and he was giving them feedback on it. That was comfy. There's just something lame about people asking him opinions on mainstream shit and I'm pretty sure he knows it's lame and that's why his commentary is usually so negative. He's reacting to the person asking the question, not the question itself.

Funniest because Sam is experiencing a midlife crisis and breaking down at every opportunity?
"MDE IS COMING BACK DUDE!!!!!!!!!! FOR REAL!!!!!!!!!!! I'M NOT WASHED UP NIGGER NIGGER NIGGER *LOUD NOISES* NIGGER!!!!!!!!!!! I'M STILL FUNNY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Sad. I hope I can handle my 40s better that
Holy fuck you're dumb dude. That was a bit lol. Sam went into detail about it on the last PKA. What made it extra funny is that low IQ retards like you actually bought it. He was reciting a script he wrote the previous day.

I don't really agree with the anti-Lynch take but his take on horror films is spot on.
