Can any internet experts explain why fats have to get their gallbladder removed? I never knew that was a fat thing.

fats, esp women, typically have more cholesterol in their system which lends to gallstones creation/size
Apart from higher levels of cholesterol in their bile which causes gallstones, rapid weight loss also will cause existing gallstones to become worse as it causes the liver to secrete extra cholesterol into the bile. This is why after sustained weightloss many people need their gallbladder removed. Many obese people will try rapid weightloss diets a few times before giving up. It's very common for those with existing gallstones to have cholecystectomy performed at the same time as bariatric surgery. If the gallbladder is not removed, then bariatric surgery patients will be prescribed ursodiol for six months post surgery.

I've had issues with my gallbladder randomly, still have no idea what caused the issues. The doctor in the emergency room said gallstones were most common in the "3 Fs" Fat, female and forty..... Apparently the correlation is so high, it's a term used in most countries that speak English.

I was listening to a podcast earlier today, and stumbled across a possible entry for the list of "Unlikely Conditions That Nevertheless Might Help Explain Whatever the Fuck is Wrong With Chantal":

Bardet Biedl Syndrome

This is a rare genetic condition that presents with a spectrum of issues and symptoms. It's obviously pretty unlikely that Chins has this, but there were a few features of the syndrome that caught my attention:

  • obesity, particularly with central / "apple-shaped" fat distribution
  • short stature
  • abnormalities of the digits, including webbing, polydactyly, or unusually short, stubby fingers and toes
  • distinctive facial features including wide-set eyes
  • dental abnormalities, including a small palate and crowded teeth
  • cognitive impairments, not amounting to retardation but often indicated by poor academic performance in childhood
  • behavioral problems such as emotional immaturity and inappropriate outbursts
  • a partial or complete loss of sense of smell (I'm being a little petty including that one, but you have to admit it would explain a few things.)
There are some other symptoms of the syndrome that I don't think Chinny has displayed any evidence of suffering from:

  • issues with kidney function are common, although not always serious enough to cause health issues
  • possible issues with the heart and digestive organs
  • vision impairment beginning in childhood, often progressing to legal blindness by adolescence and including poor night vision in adults
  • abnormalities of the reproductive system, including hypogonadism in males
So, probably not. But the doctor discussing it in the podcast was saying that he wonders if this syndrome falls on a wider spectrum than is generally recognized, which could lead to many undiagnosed sufferers. Apparently it would require extensive (but feasible) genetic testing to determine, and few patients are tested that thoroughly.

Anyway, I thought it was a compelling possibility.

Something really annoyed me with my new doctor today that makes me feel like bitching SOMEWHERE on KFs. This thread seems about right!

I got a new doctor. Did my first check up with her today. At the time I was 20ish pounds overweight from having a baby a couple years back. The weight has been stubborn AF and at the time I hadn't been doing my part enough to lose it.

I saw the doctor type in my information, including my weight, on her computer. There was a popup on her screen that said "Patient is overweight, discuss health risks." She didn't see me watching, but she still she promptly closed that tab and we discussed stuff not related to my weight.

I kept thinking damn bitch, I should lose weight and it's ok to shame me a LITTLE for Christ's sake. I'd love that fucking some doctor-shame motivation.

It has me thinking that doctors might be trained to not 'shame' people now. So when DOES she suggest I lose weight? At 40 pounds overweight? 60 pounds? 120?? When does she actually tell me to lose some of my fat-ass or my heart is gonna struggle?

Funny enough her lack of shame motivated me so since then I've been working hard to lose weight since. I'm now 15 pounds overweight, go me!

Anyway, just felt like I needed to share this. Just doesn't feel right that a doctor is ignoring health issues just to spare my feelings.

Is this why American girls/women are getting fatter by the year? From not being shamed in the earlier stages of being overweight? Feels fucking wrong man

@Thomas Eugene Paris (obviously) I can’t fathom having a yeast infection for that length of time. What does a chronic yeast infection like that do to the body? Could it actually be life threatening?

As far as I know, persistent Candida infection of the vagina is not life threatening by itself. As @Pudgy Bear Claws suggests, though, the itching would be enough to cause most women to seek treatment well before the two decade mark. It could be seriously debilitating for a woman who has to do anything other than sit on the couch and be miserable all day, so I guess it might not have impacted Polissa's quality of life very much.

However, when the chronic yeast infection is an indication of long-standing hyperglycemia caused by uncontrolled diabetes, the picture is different. If not treated properly, the inexorable progression of diabetes will ruthlessly destroy a patient's eyesight, kidney function, teeth, limbs, and brain vasculature. Any patient who has more than three episodes of vaginal Candida infection in a year is considered to have a "chronic" infection and should probably be evaluated for an underlying cause. Basically, the yeast won't kill her, but it could be a sign that something else is.

There are rare case reports of Fournier gangrene arising from solitary fungal infections. FG is a massive necrotizing infection that begins on the taint area and rapidly consumes the skin and deep fascia of the genital area (except the penis for some reason), thighs, and lower abdomen. It's most common in overweight men with poorly controlled diabetes and is frequently fatal. Survivors often need massive skin grafting and long term diversion of bowel and bladder.

The other exception to the "vaginal yeast infection won't kill you" rule is if the fungus somehow enters the bloodstream. This is called candidemia and it is the most common cause of fungal sepsis in hospitalized patients. Usually, the patient is already really sick with something else or has a compromised immune system from chemotherapy or an organ transplant. Other risk factors include but are not limited to presence of a central venous catheter (especially if it is used for the administration of total parenteral nutrition), recent abdominal surgery, length of intensive care stay, solid tumors or hematologic malignancy, multiorgan transplant, and necrotizing infection of the pancreas. Candidemia is notoriously difficult to treat and has a mortality rate approaching 50%, but one should keep in mind that patients who get it are almost always critically ill already. I'm sure case reports exist of candidemia arising from vaginal yeast infection, but I'm too lazy to search for and vet them.

Finally, be aware that doing a search for "chronic Candida infection" will retrieve a TON of bullshit woo about leaky guts and "ME/CFS" or whatever the fuck.

I would have to agree with the comments around not coming back from obesity health wise even with weight loss. The actor who played the obese football player in Varsity Blues for example later underwent gastric bypass but still died a few yeas later of obesity related illness even though he reached a normal weight.
