As a former alcoholic, while alcohol does make you need to pee, it's also a social tool for alcoholics to excuse themselves from the embarrassing social situations they have concocted for themselves. Right now as he is doing his best to not make an utter mess in the restroom and piss all over the place, and he will have a choice:

Path A: Come back to the gathering and excuse himself from it for the rest of the evening. He will have understood that he has made an absolute fool of himself and will get out now in the hopes that people will forget about whatever he did up to this point. If he is lucky, someone else with a drinking problem will top whatever he did up to that point, making him look like the lesser of two fools and he will be more or less on the road to recovering from his problem.

Path B (The path Nick will choose): He will come back to the gathering and fix this. He's so cool, he's got this. What could possibly go wrong? He's so fucking cool.
