Its not that, sometime in 2017 they changed the algo to give priority to longer runtime creators, plus you'd get more ads played on your videos. both result in these "essays" type videos. beyond that is the deemphasis on shitting out videos weekly or daily which was another early youtube staple. the youth don't remember but 2000s youtube was a lot closer to tiktok with how short most content was, music videos were the longest videos on there. most of the bigger stars vidoes and viral videos were less than 3 minutes, so coming up with some dumb thing in your bedroom to do for 180 seconds a day was piss easy. in the 2010s the time slowly got up there with most videos starting to hit 7-ish minutes which is when you can get two ads on a video vs one, IIRC. Then they really starting fucking with everything because i guess they thought they had to destroy pewdiepie or the nazis win so we went from 7 minute videos of guys just talking daily or weekly in their bedrooms to multihour epics about any bullshit topic because anyone that manages to get through it is worth 20x as much to you as a view as those old videos with a transparent ad on the bottom quarter of the screen people would just x out of. Even the so called "normie" content like say Mr.Beast is 20+ minute substitute tv shows with higher production value and take a month to make. Its to the point where someone doing "new video every week" is considered a cool niche in itself, a throwback to the fun days of youtube, and even those guys have in video sponsors now. Because thats literally your other option besides chasing the algo, having in video sponsors.
