You don't need to eat meat for survival in western countries if he's strictly speaking about calorie intake. Obviously there are nutritional reasons to eat meat that other diets can't satisfy without supplementation. But if you can fulfill those requirements through supplementation do you need the meat? No you need the nutrient that meat provides. That's probably the autistic breakdown of it.
