IP count being removed is funny. People will have a thread that they are talking back and forth in, then someone will come into the thread and deride it because the IP count is low and thus... suspicious? Or ">new post; >IP count didn't go up" schizo shit without elaborating what they are trying to insinuate, just that that's not a good thing. Like there's an inkling of a point they're trying to get across, but it doesn't make sense. Are people supposed to only post in a thread once and never again? On the other end of the spectrum you have the "1 post by this ID" call outs on /pol/. So you can't have people posting more than once in a thread, but if someone posts once and dips, that's not good either. Maybe I'm just retarded and not reading the room on this correctly.

Whatever case it is, I can only assume this change was prompted by a minority of people obsessing over it and derailing threads as I described and now the toys have to be taken away, much like a certain thing that was also recently taken away in a more familiar place. Coincidence?

The hell is with websites removing features? 4chan removes the IP address. Null messed about with the rating system in numerous ways. Twitter is, as far as I know, still going to remove visible likes and such from timelines. Just funny how three totally different sites are doing somewhat similar things within a week or so span.

The IP count was nice to have for the Mogra threads to see how many people still attend those, but it's not like the people in charge of 4chan made any good decisions regarding the website in years.

Are they truly so incompetent that they must disable IP counts in order to allow for such spam? It would be much less detected to give institutional spammers a code to prevent or force manipulation of the counter instead. Anyway, it was already mostly worthless; it was fun to switch IPs to increment the counter and get plausible deniability, and to mock particularly empty general threads, but not useful for much else.

If a thread has a hundred posts but only 1 poster it's a samefag thread, if a thread suddenly gains a lot of posts from different posters all at once it's a discord tranny raid. If a new post claims to be a new user but the IP count doesn't go up, they're bullshitting, if it does go up but the post is pretending to be someone else, chances are they're derailing the thread.
I'm well aware that this sounds like insane drivel, but it has uses just like flags or IDs have uses. Rather than ask "why does it matter that they would remove this feature?", a more important question would be "why would they remove this feature?"
Every answer I've seen is sinister.

This, the removal of the IP counter is a big deal. I hate to schizo post, but I can’t imagine any legitimate advertising firm would want to spam ads on fucking 4chan, for the first time in my life, I could believe this is some glow-op by a state actor. But why? 4chan is fucking dead, it’s lost its cultural relevance. I cant think of any memes in the past few years that originated organically from 4chan.

Baskin Roberts Trust Fund Band spamming is out, "Humiliation Ritual" spamming is in. I am also seeing quite a bit of "Bag Tool Wrench Slam" being used in contexts where it would have yesterday been Baskin posting.

I saw an interesting theory regarding disappearing IP counts. It posited something to the effect of the current owner of 4chan wanting to obfuscate the user numbers to make it more attractive to potential buyers. I am not sure how realistic that is.

To me the new captcha is the nail in the coffin of modern 4chan. Like even if you thought 2024 was even worth using why bother with new captcha system? Are you really so addicted to a garbage website you have to buy a pass?
