I'm always curious. French authors popped up quite a bit when I was making a master list for the Fucked Up Book Thread. I suspect something about the relatively constant social and governmental upheaval, the myriad of wars and conflicts and the liberal laws surrounding free speech made France a perfect place for an explosion of dark literature in the 19th century.
