The Linux Thread - The Autist's OS of Choice

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
also, try winetricks and look up how to tweak a wine prefix to make it work
Meh.
Wine (and especially proton) are amazing and all, but frankly it's less hassle setting up a Windows VM with GPU passthrough and LookingGlass than it is to do wine "properly", especially when the software inevitably updates itself and breaks, or wine updates and breaks. The exception is Steam with Proton, but that's not always perfect either, even if it is usually quite smooth. The reality is, a lot of the time there's simply no option but to use Windows. And that sucks.

. i expect everything to be free software, that means free as in freedom
I'm beginning to suspect that you don't have a lot of real world experience in creating things. You literally have real world examples of what will happen, and several were mentioned in this thread. If you had ever worked on a project that had more then one contributor or did any sort of commission work you would understand that this theoretical "freedom" will at best just lead to people who actually put work and investment in will get to dictate the terms to other people, but with enough abstraction that they don't have to care if their actions restrict your freedoms.

It's pretty clear from the way he writes he's completely delusional. Cannot write a single post without using some sort of pejorative lingo and establishing his dominance over the peasants, completely schizophrenic formatting, or rather the lack of it, and opinions that are the poster child of the Linux user stereotype.

You cannot reason with the insane. Don't bother.

just think about it and realize what kind of a fucking dystopian world we live in where someone else can give our slaves instructions for what to do, and even tell them to actively harm, enslave, backstab, etc... their masters
it's not far fetched at all because computers are (or at least were meant to be) digital slaves for their users, but with proprietary software you become the slave, while the computer becomes the whip used by your jewish massa.
i'm living proof for using only free software being completely possible, even if it means that you have to use 12 year old server boards with 16 CPU cores and 64 gigs of 1600MHz ECC RAM while sucking 600 of power 24/7
i'm talking about the ASUS KCMA-D8 for example here, the KGPE-D16 can take 32 (or i think 64?) CPU cores and 128-256GiB of RAM, it's just a KCMA-D8 but a bit better, and each one of them costs around 200-300$ each including RAM, CPUs, a cheap PSU, and some duct tape because i was too lazy to find a chassis that could fit the weird EATX-like +1cm form factor.
along with that, throw in a GTX 780ti and you have a nice workstation, or just use a 20$ thinkpad.
all of the things i listed obviously support coreboot/libreboot without binary blobs, but you will have to keep things like CPU models on the server boards and wifi cards in the thinkpads (as well as GPUs, soundcards, ethernet controllers, etc...) in mind to make sure that everything works with free software.
tl;dr, GTX 780ti, soundblaster audigy 4, opteron 4284 (x2), some 8GiB 1600MHz ECC ram that's confirmed to work well with coreboot memory init (or just working with the board in general, the chance is 90% that it will work fine with coreboot as well if you don't pick weird chinesium crap)
throw this into a KCMA-D8
or get a thinkpad X200, clean up the thermal paste and replace it, clean up the dust, replace the (g)intel(e) wifi card with an ath9k (ideally AR9382) one, throw in a new SSD and 8GiB (2x4) of RAM (the right one, specifically 2Rx8), and maybe get a new battery if your old one is dead.
if you want to, you can get a dock and use it as a desktop hybrid like one of those wintendo snitch game consoles, that's what i'm doing btw.
you could also throw in an expresscard to usb or m.2 adapter to get 2/3 more USB 3.0 ports or another SSD (you could use the SATA port for a big hard drive and the SSD as boot drive), maxing out your thinkpad.
of course, don't forget to compile and install coreboot or libreboot (without blobs), you need an SPI flasher (e.g. raspberry pi pico, ch341a, any other raspberry pi, etc..) to initially install it thanks to israel (((write protecting))) the intel ME region if your bios chip to prevent you from removing it.
remember kids: intel inside, means israel inside; and intelligence agencies inside.

Are you fucking retarded? cp, mv and rm are a nigh-universal standard for any command interpreter, UNIX or not. Windows has the equivalent "type" command that does the exact same as "cat", and the rest exists purely on UNIX out of necessity since Windows doesn't need them and doesn't have the same permissions/ownership system to begin with.

Please fucking kill yourself so we don't have to be embarrassed that you're still trying to play for our "side" and suffer through your poorly-formatted drivel.
dos has the same commands?
well, the point is that the average wintoddler never uses any commands, or even knows about them because windoze is exclusively used by bill gates fanboy trannies and computer illiterate people like your grandma.
unrelated fun fact, my grandma actually uses trisquel.
>type
ask a random windows user 'what does the type command do?', and show me the first response you get.
now do the same thing with a GNU user but for the cat command.
b-but wihinidows doesn't NEED them!
correct, because windows users don't do much more than using their operating system as a bootloader for a web browser and some rootkit 'anticheat' video games anyway.
does the average windows user even know what permission/ownership system means?
i don't actually know how windoze's works because i don't use it, but i assume it's some braindamage that was only made up to poorly copy unix while changing random things to piss off people, just like using backslashes for directory separation instead of slashes.

lol it's literally on XenForo.

Without an ongoing support contract.

The only thing better than free software is proprietary software you aren't paying for.
that's still shittier than free software you paid for, but i was talking about the operating system itself. some webshit is unlikely to break unless you actually update your dependencies.
if null actually updated his shit, xe/xir foro or whatever would break immediately, and there is nothing he could do about it other than downgrading the dependencies or reverse engineering that garbage to make it work.
Hold up, who?

Oh.
apparently some people don't understand sarcasm or ironic shitposting.

i see that those "real world people" such as the german government are moving to free software (GNU/Linux and libreoffice) now because of how shitty proprietary software has got in the past years. in the 90s it may have been bad as in "pay me 5$ to use this shit forever and just remember this activation code you can use offline or share around and install on any other machine", but nowdays they say "pay us 200$ per month for being allowed to use this shit under certain conditions with a ton of restrictions, requiring a constant internet connection and a ... account, until we say that you can't use it anymore, just say 'fuck you', and revoke yo- i mean OUR loicense".

why do you think that many geniuses were (and still are) labelled "insane" in the past?
sometimes it turns out that they were actually geniuses nobody understood up until a few hundred years in the future after their deaths, but sometimes they just turn out to be retards who spew out garbage to look like a retard.
don't confuse schizophrenic people for the latter.

I don't see any confusion here. You quite clearly fall under the latter.

So you don't deny being the faggot "ironically shitposting" about fucking 6-year-old children?

It would be one thing if he was a literal child with no real world experience, but now I'm wondering what kind of lifestyle he has that he can be so completely isolated from how things get made. Every attempt to make something truly free ends up getting subverted by a small percentage of people actually putting the work in and making things their way. Like SystemD is very invasive, but it's also a large complex project with several companents that work together. Because if you don't have big projects that audit their own code you'll end up with forgotten single contributor code that gets heavily relied on but it doesn't get properly audited.

Even the whole public source thing is a bit of a lie, as the source code that you can read doesn't actually have to match the precompiled files that get installed. Its actually possible to have the public source code be completely unrelated to the installed programs providing it seems to work the same way. And there's no way to verify if the code hasn't been edited to have malware because when you compile it from source it'll never be identical enough for checksums to match. You simply have to trust that the creator hasn't gone through the effort of making two versions of the file, a trust that was easily broken by the XZ developer.

So how do you solve the trust issues? The only real way is to compile every program you ever use from source, reading and comprehending every single source file. Nobody does that, not even the most autistic Arch users. You will eventually have to trust that someone is guaranteeing that the code you use is safe, and that person now has the power to dictate what software you use and how you use it. The only difference with "free" software is instead of a monolithic entity you can sue having the responsibility and power over you, you now have a rather opaque collection of people you just have to blindly trust. Maybe they're idiots with good intentions, maybe they want to have the prestige of being the default programs, maybe they are collectives that want to enforce standards, and maybe they are state actors that slip through the gaps.

If the XZ backdoor successfully made it to production and caused major damages, who's responsible? That one depressed guy in the Nordics had no hand in the malware and has no ability to pay for damages, and if it wasn't him it would be some other faceless developer who takes the fall. All we know of the person responsible is a username and the fact that he seems to work in a Chinese timezone. How would we hold him responsible for his actions?

With a monolithic entity like Microsoft they are required to have some level of guarantee that their code is secure, as they can be held directly responsible for damages and have their reputation at stake. Some bumfucker in Scandinavia cannot be held liable for dangerous code and does not have the same incentive to ensure his code is safe.

The whole sperg makes me think of imagemagick. It’s a tiny project maintained by a single guy since like the 90s, and it’s the backbone of just about every image tool on Linux and probably baked into many Windows and OSX ones as well. Killing it off wouldn’t make any difference for probably years, but eventually it would break so much software. Someone might take over it, sure, but twice as many will go “it’s old and therefore outdated, I’m making a new one in rust”. Is it not then better to have corporations like Microsoft Azure or Red Hat involved, and actual development teams assigned to make sure everything works and develops in a reasonable direction?
All we know of the person responsible is a username and the fact that he seems to work in a Chinese timezone.
Which implies he’s actually from an enemy of China. It’s intelligence games all the way down. The fact that he’s so “obviously” Chinese is very strongly indicative that he’s actually a yank.

Hey, wait a minute. Wasn't there a "jonahgoldberg" involved in the Torswats shit here?
Jonahgoldberg isn't necessarily a unique username - the bulk of the connections between the Torswats-related Jonahgoldberg and his other aliases was his behavior that remained relatively consistent and his shared connections with other, more uniquely-named users / consistently named Discord groups.

Unless it actually is a Chinese agent who knew if they made it blatantly obvious they were Chinese then people would suspect it was an American fed trying to blame the Chinese. Which (and it's recursions) circle back to we know nothing about the guy responsible and cannot hold him accountable.

We need to look at motives of the parties, then.
China: Lovely socialist country trying to improve the lives and happiness of its citizens.
USA: Evil empire wrapping its tendrils across every throat it can reach.
I know which side I’m on.

Imagine actually believing this. :story:
I thought your takes on systemd and Wayland were bad

The overwhelming likelihood is that this was a retarded Chinese glowie who got caught, not some NSA gayop

ring 0 rootki- ehhhm, "anticheats" i mean, work perfectly fine as long as it isn't chinesium (so anything popular that actually added lunix support, such as battleeye or easy anticheat), and game devs actually go out of their way to disable GNU/Linux support in their proprietary shitware
honestly, the fact that something is proprietary should deter you enough already, but if that isn't enough, then kernel """anticheat""" rootkits should do the trick.
Speaking of Kernal level Anti-Cheats, they are bypassed in games like Valorant which was emphasised to have no cheating. (Video has an awful, uncanny tts and uploaded is maybe a troon)
So theoretically, it can be possible to run these games anyways (will take some tinkering). I dont understand not allowing Linux or even VM when cheaters already find to cheat, when Battleye, EasyAntiCheat and even Faceit (for battlebit) have a linux option.

China: a bunch of chinks trying to ruin the world, run by a leader who hates being compared to a cartoon character.
USA: some dumb asses who think their country is the ruler of the world and is run by a dementia patient.
there, fixed it for you.
go spead your chink propaganda somewhere else (like reddit) or follow in the footsteps of every tranny and hang yourself.

Whoever you have a support contract with.

I think it only made it into Arch and Debian sid and if you're using either in production you're an absolute turbo retard.
