To give people a break from getting their brains SLAMMED and SMASHED by the existential horror of human stupidity I'd like to point a healthier example of breeding.

We all know pugs are horror shows, meet an attempt to fix it. The Old German Pug/Retro Pug/Retro Mop has a new and improved list of features including: the ability to breathe through their nose, Eyes inside of the skull, less folds to get infected, and better health outcomes.

Look at him! So much less offensive to God and nature.

This, I am 100% behind.
Save the pugs and other breeds from the inbreeding so that they can live healthy lives.
Screw the kennel clubs and other morons who will go "nooo, we want them to suffer!"

Look at that underbite. I've owned a Maine Coon but it's face did not fucking look like that. What manner of smashery and slammery is this? Animals that actually look like people are terrifying.
"Hey, lil' doggie!"

This. Ive had two cats in my life and both have been absolutely phenomenal cats, very dog like in their personalities. First was a random kitten that appeared on our patio. Second was a kitten I got from a random guy off craigslist.
I've always had cats, at least one, but never on purpose. On a couple occasions, they literally just walked into the house, basically said I guess this is home now, and then I had a cat. Another, when I was living in a loft with a bunch of people, someone's cat just gravitated to me despite me never feeding him, and when she moved out, she just said, you keep it. And then "oh you like cats, here's a cat," fuck you to that person. The cat was great, though.

The latest cat is a calico cat that was a stray outside, and when I was walking a dog, the cat would jump out and pounce on the dog, and the dog loved playing with her, and winter was coming. What was I going to say to the dog? "Oh I'm sorry I'm a stingy bastard so I guess your best friend gets to die out in the cold." So then I now have a calico cat.

One of the most accurate things in Dwarf Fortress is that unlike any other pets, cats pick their owner. Dwarves generally pick their own pets. I guess cats in DF consider dwarves their pets.

There are a lot of one-off mutant cats out there. Domestic cats have that randomized no-breed vigor, but the flip side of that is if you live behind an Arby's dumpster nobody's stopping you from fucking your mom who is also your grandma.

So sometimes you get a Tarder Sauce or Li'l Bub, which is perfectly fine if you spay them and keep them in comfort and take photos of them lookin' weird. When you decide you're going to find other mutants and breed a whole line of new deformed kitties, that's when I'm out. Most recently, it's those poor Munchkin cats with their awful joint problems.

Hairless cats look weird and get cold and emotionally I feel bad for them, but intellectually I understand people have allergies. There's no reason to breed cats who get severe and painful arthritis, just so you can enjoy having a kitty who looks funny and can't jump. (And of course the increasingly severe Persians and other smoosh-faced cats have the same problems as brachycephalic dogs, plus difficulty delivering kittens due to head/pelvis mismatch.)

It seems like such a simple metric. Are you breeding a trait into animals so they can do a job, or just for pretty? If it's an aesthetic decision, that's fine, but does it hurt the animal? It's mind-boggling to have an entire industry that breeds animals to suffer just for their own amusement.

(blah blah "go vegan" but look, if people were telling us that pug meat tastes way better because of their apnea, that would at least make sense.)

Sphynxes were at least bred for a legit reason - to be hypoallergic -, instead of some bullshit appearance standards.
I'm not going to deny they aren't horrible crimes against nature, and there are plenty of people who have one just for novelty alone, but at least there was a reason for the breed to be made this way.
Problem is they're not even actually hypoallergenic. This seems to be due to the misconception that the typical cat allergy is due to cat fur, when in reality it's an allergy to an enzyme in their spit. While it's true that people with cat allergies are more likely to react to cats who shed a lot, most hairless cats still produce the enzyme in their saliva that causes the allergic response. It's still on their skin, on their shedding skin cells, in their urine, and in their mouths. There have been some studies showing the allergy response may be stronger in relation to Sphynx cats because they lack the fur to prevent the skin oils and dander from leaving their body so frequently.

That being said, certain breeds like the Devon Rex produce less of the enzyme and also have that Sphynx-adjacent look.

And, funnily enough, one of the other breeds that is considered "hypoallergenic" (they are not fully free of allergens, but they produce what is considered a tiny, negligible amount) is the Siberian, and they're crazy long haired!

Because these cats already exist regardless of if you pay or not, you are not preventing them from existing and this sort of attitude is dumb as fuck.
If a person wants a specific breed of cat then that is what they want, they don't want a cat from a shelter, this choice does not mean another cat has to die in place of a breeded cat, they did not want the shelter cat to begin with. You don't have to kill a shelter cat to adopt a Bengal or Ragdoll.

Also for the record at least in Australia, cat fancies and breeder shows donate money and food towards cat shelters/orgs.

The problem is not people who want a breed or even the breed themselves, its back yard breeders who do not do it ethically and ones who breed obviously flawed breeds.
Not sure about cat breeders, but ethical dog breeders usually require you to sign a contract that includes things like bringing the dog back to them if you can't care for it. There's also a requirement to sterilize the dog if you didn't pay extra to be allowed to breed the dog. This is why you aren't likely to see dogs from good breeders at shelters. The people buying those dogs could get in legal trouble if they did take the dog to a shelter.

Maine coon are supposed to look like they are always judging you. Not look like a sci-fi creature.

Yep was a thing in Australia when buying my cat. no breeder would sell without desexing.

Even in highly tested pedigree population of dogs tl especially with certain characteristics finding a healthy cane corso, with good hips is mountain to climb with plenty of heart ache if you don't do your homework.

My first cane corso had bad hips, and I don't like Anthropomorphism animals, dogs are animals. But I swear it felt like I let a brother in arms down my responsibility when I watched him suffering, knowing I hadn't done the necessary, out of ignorance and being lied to by the breeder.

I'd watch him at 2 years waiting at the door on Wednesday ready for training knowing he couldn't go because of the pain he'd suffer afterwards. He needed to be put down and I took him 6 times and couldn't do it. I watched a dog that would die for me literally unable to be left off the lead because he run and suffer so much afterwards.

No imagine these cunts with these bully extreme dogs, by definition they are going to suffer because a dog can't look like that. And they spread that disease, to pup after pup the labored breathing, the fucked hips, the eyes.

This is willful torturing of an animal knowing the guaranteed outcome.

My boy had a bad hip and suffered, these dogs at every possible breed choice are built to suffer. I don't think some people realise just how much agony they are in.

Honestly I've tears in my eyes, from a single issue with my boy, these guys are monsters, every characteristic they hype and boost about is going to cause pain.

I'm near speechless, how can you raise a pup watch it develop these structural issues, watch the pain, spread the genes all along that dog looking up and loving you it's heart beating irregularly but still wanting to pleases.

If you hate dogs, no problem. But these are around the dogs so much you have to have a emotional issue to overlook so much pain.

One of the big YouTubers needs to go undercover and expose the torture being done for money.

Sorry I'm mad at the internet.

I think that even normal french bulldogs shouldn't be bred some breeds just go against what's possible with flesh.

What the general consensus here with what dog breeds should be able to be bred.

What's crazy is that expensive pedigree dogs are more normal now but health testing hasn't caught up with the price.

I can kind of understand when a labrador retriever was $400 but when people are paying 1k-3k the money is there for tests

ati sorry

I hate this thread. I hate seeing these fuckers breed these poor buggers just to make profit whilst the poor animals suffer in shitty conditions. It genuinely makes me so upset especially when my two dogs are puppy farm rescues.

Humans are fucked. There's a special place for cunts who do this kinda shit. I'm well deserving of MATI awards. This shit just pisses me off.

My mum and dad say that mixed breed and mongrel dogs are often healthier than pedigree dogs. Is that true?

My current opinion is that mongrel/mixed breed dogs are generally less likely to get specific health conditions than pedigree, but have a elevated chances of contracting health conditions across the board and are also less predictable in that regard.

What's even more insane is how they would respond to this sentence. "AYO🤪🤪🤪 THIS HATER JUST MAD😡😡😡🤫🫣🤔😐😮‍💨😮‍💨 THAT I BE GETTIN DAT BAG 🤑🤑🤑🤑🤗🤭🤑😝💯💯💯🙌🙌 ALL MY BULLIEZZ ARE THE BEST IN DA GAME💯💯💯💪💪💪 DEEZ HAYTURS DON EVEN KNO WHAT DEY BE TALKIN BOUT ON BABY😝😝🤪🤪🤪😝 #REDROCKETBULLIEZ".

Bro looks like :politisperg: how the fuck!

I can only imagine how much trouble that poor cat will have chewing food when they get older.

Wasn’t sure whether to post this here or in the pitbull thread, but i had the misfortune of stumbling upon this thing on my fyp. This is one of the ugliest dogs i think i’ve ever seen - if you can even call it a dog. Its face looks so…wrong, like some uncanny valley type shit
