Business Big Tech Layoffs Megathread - Techbros... we got too cocky...

Since my previous thread kinda-sorta turned into a soft megathread, and the tech layoffs will continue until morale improves, I think it's better to group them all together.

For those who want a QRD:

Just this week we've had these going on:

But it's not just Big Tech, the vidya industry is also cleaning house bigly:

All in all, rough seas ahead for the techbros.

Lol at people quoting the IBT like it’s a real source of info rather than a content mill ran by insane god bothering paedoes.

With autopilot on, the car is in control. It's still pretty reckless to train yourself to drive distracted like that.
There are no self-driving vehicles on the market. Tesla just like everyone else are peddling a glorified lane assist and adaptive cruise control that legally and practically requires you to hold the steering wheel at all times. The car helps you drive, but it can’t drive itself.

There are research self-driving vehicles but you can’t buy them, and their actual ability to drive themselves is questionable at best. Self-driving trains are real and in revenue service though, but even they require the occasional human operator touch.

It's pretty lulz worthy that Microsoft considers paying ZeniMax's QA testers to go away is a better bargain than keeping them.

I love how -- when questioned about declining morale at the company -- the top pajeet said "hey don't worry, we're likely to have fewer layoffs in the next half of the year."

As in ... "there are more layoffs coming, cheer up lads!"

Headline: "Tesla Quietly Removes All U.S. Job Postings"
Article (directly contradicting the headline): "As of Wednesday, just three positions were on Tesla's job board."

It goes on to explain that this has happened before, and that just days later those thousands of postings were restored. Almost as if it's a mistake, or periodic maintenance, or some automated process and not a harbinger of doom. Not that you need to watch job posting boards to find those -- the endless fucking layoffs should be a big enough indicator of that.

Even for seemingly legitimate, interesting news articles, they just can't help but lie a little bit.

Fucking lügenpresse.

The Google situation reminds me of being stationed at an alphabet agency in the early to mid-90's.

Place reeked of deadwood, way too many people doing little, and way too many just hanging on until retirement. They started getting those civilians retired, one way or another. For a while, you got used to ambulances pulling up to entry control points, hauling off some civilian who had a medical issue related to being told they had to go.

Not sure how many left but the place never missed a beat. I sure as hell was happy to see Fort Meade in the rear-view mirror, got as far away as I could from the place while still staying in the continental USA. Hated going there in the first place, hated being there, just a fucking waste.

don't you buy the games, nope only grandstanding on Twitter.
according to people who were in attendance, Square Enix president Takashi Kiryu said that both the company’s American and European arms would be hit with layoffs, which will happen over the course of the next month.

The scale of the layoffs wasn’t shared, but staff were told that people working in publishing, IT, and Square Enix’s Collective indie games division will be predominantly affected.

Those impacted will be informed this week, staff were told. In the UK, employees will enter into a one-month consultancy period, as per local employment law, while US-based staff could leave their roles before June.

Following the internal meetings on Monday, many of Square Enix’s main Slack channels were locked, VGC was told.

VGC has asked Square Enix for comment on this story.

Kiryu, who was appointed as the Final Fantasy firm’s new boss in June 2023, has been enacting a large-scale reorganisation of Square Enix’s development efforts, in an effort to reverse recent disappointing sales of its biggest games.

In Japan, Square Enix recently promoted a new group of creators to its executive officers, and placed checks on producers’ influence over individual projects, according to Bloomberg.
Earlier today, Square Enix published a new medium-term business plan, which revealed its intention to make its AAA games multiplatform going forward.

The plan, which the publisher has dubbed ‘Square Enix Reboots and Awakens’, lays out a three-year strategy which it hopes will lead to “long-term growth”.

Publication of the plan coincided with Square Enix’s latest financial results, which indicated that profits were down nearly 70% from the previous year, partly due to “the recognition of ¥22,087 million ($141 million) in losses on disposal of content as an extraordinary loss”.

Those losses are related to the cancellation of projects that don’t fit with its future strategies, it said, suggesting they may have been either tied to a single platform or relied too heavily on external developers.

Square Enix said that, going forward, it will “aggressively pursue a multiplatform strategy that includes Nintendo platforms, PlayStation, Xbox and PCs”.

By doing this, it will be able to “build an environment where more customers can enjoy our titles in regards to major franchises and AAA titles, including catalogue titles,” it said.

While not explicitly mentioned in the plan, recent Final Fantasy games including Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth all launched as PS5 exclusives, and it’s been claimed that sales of the latter titles have been underwhelming.

It's amazing how these medium-term and long-term "business plans" of video game companies never seem to include "make a decent fucking game."
And its not even fully the execs problem anymore. The days of "The games great, narratives awesome, but the monetization is ass" are long past, now we get shitty games at higher prices with garbage stories and even more aggressive monetization. You can blame the execs for more monetization, but I ain't never seen a C-Suite decide that every gun should sound like a confetti popper and that the story should be about gays being super gay in a war that doesn't matter cuz they're the big gay.

Clearly she's a master negotiator. Imagine going from "hey we could probably still trim the belt a little bit if we really have to" all the way to "fuck you and the horse you rode in on cunt, you're fired and everyone in your division is fired" in just one conversation.

I couldn't get fired that quick even if I tried. :story:
