Kayla being a passive lazy do nothing has been a problem in their relationship for years. Nick's response to that was to take over some of the responsibilities that would naturally fall under her portfolio (cooking, driving the kids to activities etc). Of course this leads to resentment. Kayla has expressed open anxiety and uncertainty about it. Nick's "I will be us" tattoo is a real indictment of his mindset regarding their relationship. I'm sure if really probed, he feels like he's doing it all. Nick positioned himself as a true head of household but skipped the part where you have to make tough decisions and have tough conversations early. Kayla's laziness and Nick's reckless desire to compensate for it is one of the many tumors that was slowly killing their marital relationship and their relationship with everyone else including their children. Then he blew it all up. This is self-harm when faced with difficult problems.

Sorry but I do not believe for one second that Nick's decline was because he was being too much of a great dad. It's pretty much certain that Kayla was an emotional vampire but Nick has no empathy to begin with, so it was probably more of an annoyance than actual emotional labor. I've been thinking about that, after warrant mentioned that Nick was already known to police due to the threat of swatting his livestreams. I wonder if Nick mistakenly believed he had got himself into position with the PD where they would contact him first before busting down his door.
That would explain how he became bold enough to have that much shit at the house, and why he was so tilted when the thing he thought couldn't happen, happened. Thought he had found a clever loophole as a side benefit of having engaged with the PD to mitigate swatting risk.
