I’ve thought of a few. I could argue that he lives in a small, tight-knit, and conservative town. He’s probably pissed off more than enough people in his community/Kayla’s family that a couple of “Karens” might not like him at all, even before he was into drugs. He mentions that one person in particular really had it out for him. His behavior and obvious drug use may have laid the groundwork for them to finally do something about it.
