He was always this. The personality flaws became more extreme as time went on. He got too comfortable with the success like many Youtubers.
He started using the show as his therapy session. The substance abuse creeped in making flaws worse. The audience saw this as "authentic" and "real". Instead, it was sad and boring to hear a man whine about his life.

You could see it slip through at certain times, take the drunken spergout over Vic not coming on his show during Weeb Wars.
He freaked out live on Thomas Roiloup in a very similar situation to Montegraph.

People excused his behavior as it was directed mostly at people they didn't know or people who deserved it. Based mostly on good faith from his audience. His reputation was so widespread it took the arrest for other creators to even notice/admit the spiral.
Content change was when people started to see it finally. Now many people change content styles over the years. Nick sealed his fate by telling his fans off. One of the sins you don't do and clear symptom of lolcow spiral.

I think that it is 2 for most people here. For me it is some place between 1 and 2. I think he was more than likely an entitled asshole, but at the end of the day a flawed person with some good traits who went on to make some fucktarded decisions that when combined with his (sober) bad qualities, amplified them.
