As for me, a newcomer, I think accountability and rehab are essential. I also choose option #1 in your post. I am a softie and believe strongly in redemption. Speaking from my own experience, if you have an addictive personality (which definitely exists, scientific basis or not), at some point you will wake up and look in the mirror and make a decision. You may not be forced to make that decision, and nothing may have gone wrong yet, but you will wake up with a hangover or look like shit or just be sick of feeling tired every day. That day you decide you either quit whatever it is or you justify it in your head. If you quit, you will then be faced with a similar decision every time you hit a "trigger" (if you drink a beer when you get home, you will probably be thinking about it when you pass the corner gas station on the way to your house, etc etc). Eventually it'll go away. But everybody makes a choice. Nobody is truly "lost" like people claim they are. If you are an addict to drugs or alcohol, it is the result of conscious decisions that you have made. I'll step down from my soapbox now. Carlson is right. And much like with diets, you really should not even think about having a "cheat day" because it's not a slippery slope, it's a fucking cliff face.
