I don't think we're ever going to get an answer because unlike her husband Kayla is never going to come online and spill the beans. Even in the event of a divorce, Kayla would then be locked into a "Nick is evil and I'm a victim" narrative, she would never be candid and forthcoming under those circumstances.

I choose to believe they're both bad people that more or less deserve each other.

I truly don’t understand why so many people want to believe that Kayla was manipulated or that she’s going to divorce Nick. At this point it feels like a bunch of dudes who want to hold on to their fairy tale belief that a woman can do no wrong until an evil man forces their hand.

You all need to just get over that and accept the monster Kayla Rekieta is. She was so supportive of Nick’s alcoholism that she bought the shitty painting. She was so supportive of the sexual voyeurism that she worse dresses they bought from sex shops to parties and had a “suitcase full of sex toys.” This is a woman who left her 9 year old home alone to babysit very very young siblings with no method of getting help or driving them to the hospital in the event of N emergency. This is a woman who we all knew was strung out on pills watching Star Trek in bed all day instead of being a part of her children’s lives.

But more than any of that. This is a woman who was making snow angels, exchanging Valentines Day gifts, doing cocaine, and laying in a four person orgy bed while her children were left starving, unbathed, and and unclothed in a trashed house. Nick is to blame for all of that, yes, but Kayla shares the same blame, possibly even more because unlike Nick, she carried each of those kids for 9 months and went through the tragedy of two miscarriages before finally getting her first child. Of all people in this situation, Nick, Aaron, April, and Kayla, Kayla is the one person who should have been against it all. Kayla is the person who should have been most aware of how much of a blessing their life with the kids was. Kayla was the person who should Have chosen the family she fought so hard for over the drugs and sex. But she didn’t. She’d rather get high and and ignore that family so she could have a teenage-tier romance with another man.

You don’t get manipulated in that. You don’t get controlled into that. And you don’t get forced into it either. As far as I’m concerned, Kayla Rekieta is genuinely a monster of a human and I want her to fry even worse than I want Nick to fry.

I think Nick convinced her he was truly a Christian, he wanted a big family and he had a trust fund to finance it all!

I think Nick wanted a naive, virginal, obedient wife and where are you going to find one of those if not in a religious community?. I’m sure maybe there are some rare non-religious obedient trad types out there but in 2004 if you wanted a virginal white girl that was happy to let her husband lead while she stayed home to take care of the house and kids, you looked for a religious chick.

The weirdest thing to me was to see what an earnest Christian Kayla was up until the last five year. It’s how she described herself, her thinking, her behaviors and Nick agreed with this assessment. In the clips she’s now the new “tattooed, enlightened, wife of cool streamer” but I think until 2019 or so she was the real deal hardcore Christian mom.

Nick never came off as an earnest believer, but maybe a convenient Christian? It made his parents happy, Kayla liked it, good PR in the community. I think his Christian role playing started out to win Kayla over and his parents (who have millions of dollars) loved it, so he just went with it because it was getting him what he wanted.

Only once he was “bored” and started making YT bucks did he decide he could cast off that Christian mask.

I think the people who regularly watched Nick back in the day are more likely to say that he was at one point genuinely Christian, and then changed over the course of time. Regardless of whether he was genuinely Christian or not, this is going to be true, since people aren't quick to admit that they were fooled.

Someone who is mostly interested in Nick as of recent is more likely to believe that he was never a true Christian. They'll see his blasphemy and degeneracy and be convinced that he was playing his Christianity up for the camera, that it was never that sincere.

To broadcast my own bias, I began watching Nick first when he interviewed Tonka. I watched him pretty consistently up until the last year or two where his streams took a significant nose dive in quality.

I think the best way to see if someone genuinely believes something is to see how expensively they will signal those beliefs. For example, just saying you are Christian is very low cost. Words are free, it costs nothing to say them. PETA coming out and saying stupid things is a costly signal. They look bad while doing it, and they know it makes them look bad, that's why they do it. It's a costly way to signal allegiance to a belief. Say what you want about PETA (they are indeed crazy, and probably doing more harm than good), but it would be very hard to argue that they don't believe in reducing animal suffering (please don't start arguing about PETA in this thread).

I think the highest cost signal Nick has for his religion is his homeschooling of his kids in the church co-op. This isn't that high of a cost, but it is a moderate cost. Other things include how he completely avoided swearing, and talked about his religion quite a bit. To you and me these seem low-cost, but to a content creator these are moderate costs, since they will alienate an audience. Nick kept these "rules" up for quite a while. I remember he also stopped making "daddy no" jokes because of a murder case (I'm pretty sure it was the Chris Watts case?).

This is why I believe Nick most likely started off as genuinely Christian. I think these costly signals offer a useful insight into why he became less religious. Not swearing and talking about God alienates your audience. At first, this was clearly more important to Nick than his e-fame, otherwise he would have dropped it. At some point he began to realize just how costly the signal was becoming (not swearing/being overtly religious) since he had access to more potential fame, so he gave up these signals in favour of the fame.

So, Nick was always a Christian, but he also had never been challenged on his costly signals of being religious. He never had to give up signaling his religion for money (which he had access to both through inheritance and he worked at a religion-associated financial institution), or for fame/attention/pride. His ego was always what controlled him, he was just never challenged on it until he got Internet fame. After he dropped the costly signals, he felt less attached to religion as a whole.


Here's the more speculative part:
Nick, potentially, could have been "saved" early on if his priest had realized that Nick was no longer carrying around these costs. If right after Nick had started to swear publicly, the priest had forced Nick to adopt a new costly signal, he might not have erred so greatly. For example the priest could have told Nick to repent by publicly apologizing (on livestream) for his language. This is generally the kind of things religions do to keep people inside the religion. It's much harder to start to question religion when you are also publicly flogging yourself for said religion. This is a significant reason why there are many more people who leave say Lutheranism than there are people who leave Scientology or Mormonism.

A touch of fat definitely helps soften and even out these features.

I think people are trying too hard to make kayla out to be some sort of methed out lady macbeth. Its really reaching at best and complete fanfiction at worst. When he was younger, he had less facial hair and it was lighter. All those features are still there, he just learned to hide them. I would never say he looks better now though, the ugliness of his soul is seeping through his eyes.

It's always infuriated me to see women get off easily or be cast in a sympathetic light when they commit or assist with atrocities... if they assisted a man they often get very light sentences or sometimes complete immunity. The latter was true in the case of Janice Hooker who assisted her husband in holding a woman captive in a box under their bed for like a decade... the former was true of Karla Homolka who helped her boyfriend torture and kill multiple girls including her own little sister.

Honestly I could see this happen with the Rekietas if Nick moved up from tormenting animals. The Balldo Killer would be a hell of a Wikipedia entry.
