Why is chris linking people to it?
Zach, Tomar, and him are in it.

I thought it was very boring and not good. Way too slow paced and most jokes have no punch to them. It's just animal characters saying normal things. The animation is way too riggy too. Complete and utter borefest that he's already trying to sell marketable plushies for. It's a shame most of the cartoon community is going to suck Mark's dick instead of being honest about how shitty his work is.

I knew this was going to be shit, it is both stiff and generic for something seemingly inspired by early Fairly Odd Parents, in fact it fits more as a one off episode of the latter seasons of that show.
And, just as you said, cartoon obsessed retards will deep throat Mark for making this turd.

It's okay for what it is, but it could definitely use more jokes and fewer clichés. I don't see much originality here. The character designs are fine—not great, but not awful either.

I’m also confused about the "adult themes" like cursing and drinking that are present. If it’s going to be treated like a kids' show anyway, why include those elements? Who’s the target audience? It wouldn't fit on Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, or Disney due to the adult themes, but it’s not interesting enough for Adult Swim either. It feels like it’s stuck in a weird middle ground. That kind of "XD relatable" humor worked in 2010-2015, but it’s pretty dated now. Even shows like Smiling Friends—which still does that—balance it with real conversations and unexpected twists to keep it fresh.

There are just too many clichés and not enough payoff. You'd think that, as someone whose identity revolves around cartoons, there would be more original ideas here instead of recycled tropes. Look at older pilots like 3 Dog Band or A Kitty Bobo Show—they were packed with fun, unique visuals, likable characters, and creativity that still holds up after 10-15 years. In contrast, Catching Up feels flat. It lacks originality, unique concepts, and distinctive art. Even the mix of realism with the wolf character seeing others as clip art has already been done by Gumball and Sir Pelo for ages.

What’s supposed to make people watch Catching Up over other shows? Is it the "real conversations" angle? Gumball, Smiling Friends, and Bojack have already done that, and better. Even Long Gone Gulch—another online pilot—surpasses it with its quirky characters, vibrant art style, fun concepts, and solid animation. After just one episode, it already offers a range of emotions to keep viewers engaged.

Meanwhile, Catching Up has no stakes or emotional highs and lows. The characters are mildly awkward or embarrassed, but that's about it. They're stagnant, and that’s probably why it feels so boring.

This was so boring. Lots of slow scenes and unfunny dialogue. The show doesn’t know its intended audience as they’re in HS but party I guess. I feel like it’s a watered down American pie or something. Rice pirate wasn’t in this because he let Mark use his sound booth.

IMG_3051.jpegIt’s funny that Chris was cucked into providing his voice. I also found this tidbit on 4chan so take it with a grain of salt.

The best I can describe this pilot is unorganized.

It immediately shows these two guys in school but it’s never visually clear that the characters are older teenagers or just young kids due to their simple design. Apparently they’re old enough to go clubbing and “get bitches” so I’m assuming that they’re in high school?

The jokes don’t land. AT ALL. There is too many long pauses. I’m half expecting a canned audience laughter to come in.

Also the blobs of background audience could’ve been drawn actual people. If the character is closer to the camera, you gotta draw a person. He’ll just a simple line art with a solid color can help with conveying a crowded club.

Yeah this pilot ain’t it.

I’m gonna expect Mark to kiss the asses of SpindleHorse (Same people behind Hazbin Hotel) to pick up his show.

I know it's actually just mid but this pilot pissed me off because Mark is a "critic." All the stuff he gives other people shit for he couldn't be bothered to apply to his own project. Just the concept I don't get? They're going clubbing but they're high schoolers? Just make them college students, drop outs, adults ffs. Why are they high schoolers? I could go on and on but my complaints would just shit the thread up.

This is a commonality in critics, despite all that criticism they can't make a better project. I think being a critic is very surface level, you see problems, but you don't see the causes of the problems.

Randy Stair would be proud of the generic NPC bully dialogue.
If characters screamed insane shit like "I BET YOU SHOVE CUCUMBERS DOWN YOUR PUSSY!" it'd atleast have some kind of shock value.

This should not have taken years, it is a common mis-step for newbies to go "I'm going to make this great big thing, and it'll take years but it'll all pay off because it'll be great!", even the pros do it sometimes. This was something you learn pretty quick when you work on this kind of stuff, huge projects are a huge risk. You don't want to be repeating the mistakes of legends like Richard Williams, and spending 3 decades working on one movie, because maybe the publishing deal will fall through and the movie will suck.

Your first thing is going to suck so don't make it a huge gamble. This should've been a way lower scope, with hokey limited animation, and basic backgrounds. Focus on getting the writing to be good and the show to be entertaining. Then scale up. Just look at Home Movies, it's way less effort but way more effective, and the characters barely move. They got the writing great in that show, to the degree that they make just the characters talking about nothing funny.

In this focus on visual presentation and animation, a big flaw in the story remains. It's so negative, and conflict driven. It's classic acting advice that (almost) every scene needs to be a negotiation, with a conflict. But this doesn't mean the character should just get shit shoveled in his face every scene and feel sad, that's just boring and sad, not good for a comedy. If nothing is going right for your character, it doesn't mean I'll invest in him, he needs to have a personality that contrasts with the misery, it'd be funnier if they made him invincible, instead of sulking about a coatroom feel he does something wild like wears both of the jackets and trots of with a sense of victory. Then you can chain that into a scene about him being too hot and thirsty.

I found myself really empathizing with the mouse when he says "Jesus Christ! Just shut the hell up about these goddamn jackets already!". Which would be good if it wasn't for the fact that it was because I was bored by them. Also don't have characters immediatly call women "bitches" if you want them to be likable.

Early Fairly Oddparents actually was pretty fast paced and witty, Catching Up is just dull and has no jokes

Animation is piss poor, and I don't like how little anything moves. At least animate your backgrounds. Animation wise, I liked the character designs but they even then they looked unoriginal. Just look at the backgrounds in any scene, look how NOTHING moves or at least the vague siloutte slides slowly up and down during the club scene.

What's sad is the voice actors seem pretty talented all things considered, and a Zach Hadel cameo (which was the only funny thing). How did LS Mark do it?

The pilot looks super inconsistent a lot of the time. Line thickness and proportions are all over the place. Especially with the grumpy wolf guy. His eyes have thinner lines than Rob's, making them look like they're from different cartoons. His eyes sometimes meet his brow, and hover underneath it, sometimes in the same shot. His brow has a crease that just does...whatever it wants.

Rob's hat is superfluous and ruins his outline, get rid of it.

It's not all bad tho, some of the animation looks pretty good and stylish. I really really like the shot of Rob spinning around on his chair, and how the glasses and drinks look at the bar. The lighting effects look nice, but they clash with the flat Butch Hartman style. The lighting looks like a plug in and I wish they had come up with a more stylized solution for it.

And like people have been saying, there are no jokes. It has the uncomfortable atmosphere of your older brother taking you to a kids movie and hating every second of it. I think Bridge Kids is a much better version of this, because it has that awkward conversational feeling to it but it also has great set ups and pay offs, and the characters are genuinely charming and funny. I can see the bones to something good in this pilot but it's not there yet, it needs work. The ending where the two guys throw away the girl's jackets could have been really nice and cathartic but the pacing was terrible and it had no bite to it. Suppose the girls had been ignoring/manipulating Rob the whole time and we see the wolf guy stand up for him, but instead they just ask him to keep holding the jackets. The drama.

I don't understand how Mark can watch so many cartoons and not absorb a more satisfying way to end his.

Also Caddicarus was in this????
