Gacha games have done to the Touhou community what crack and fent have done to the black community. If I had a dime for every god-tier artist who stopped drawing Touhou fanart after a decade plus of regular 2hu uploads in favor of Azur Lane or FGO or other shitty reskin generator, or a penny for every disgusting trannoid, annoying tourist, or degenerate fat fetishist that Cannonball and Lost Word have drawn to the community, I'd be fucking set for life.

Cannonball died quickly but it seems like Lostword is taking it easy. I was shocked at how popular it became, even spawning multiple fumos. That certainly attracted more discord retards, similar to the fumo roblox game. Can’t wait for the day these parasites move on to another host.

Out of videos on Youtube that I've seen about Lost Word, it didn't look to be too interesting to play. Though I did end up discovering some showcases of attack animations for some turn based strategy Touhou fangame, "Fantasy Maiden Wars", and those did look quite badass. Especially Okuu punching people without her nuclear powers.

Ah, here I go sperging about games again.

Please forgive my lazy newfag formatting for this 'tismpost.

>DMCAs, no source code for older games, Moriya Shrine

The DMCAs probably came from Mediascape, the company that publishes the games on Steam for ZUN because he has no idea what he's doing/is lazy.
A PC-98 Touhou repack was also targeted (Archive), which is totally fucking pointless because there's no way those games will ever be sold again. The repacker points out the irony of doing this when the PC-98 games themselves contain pirated content. (Archive)
Whether the source code of the old games is lost or not is only relevant in that they're becoming more and more fucked up by newer Windows versions and selling a broken product wouldn't be a good look. The moral aspect evidently doesn't matter, as it was found the versions of SA and UFO sold on Steam are unchanged from the pirated ones, but with DRM stapled to them (ironically making it harder for modders to do technical maintenance). Though doing that isn't so unusual; companies including GOG have also been caught selling pirate repacks of games they've "licensed".

>Lost Word, "modern fanbase"

This year's Touhou popularity poll recently concluded, and it reports demographics on every individual character (for the minority who bothered filling out all the forms). From this we can get some idea of what the current fanbase really looks like.

Respondents are about 70% Japanese, 85% east Asian. (Influence of westoid tranny fashions is probably minimal.)
70% male. 57% are under 20 years old, 90% under 30. Almost 50% overall discovered Touhou through Youtube/Nico videos.
EoSD has the highest play rate of any game... at 62%. Many of the others are below 50%.

You can take anything near the top of any of the results and see these kids have a huge influence on overrepresenting it because they all cluster around the same things. Most of them probably don't even use PCs, they know the series through remixes and might move on to Lost Word or something, then drop Touhou after a year or two and get replaced by the next wave to do it again. It makes sense that the higher up the age bracket you go, the more variety there is in the results as the tourists develop or get weeded out.

Just as with every other entertainment avenue in the cursed world we inhabit, the contingent of overly loud manchildren and/or literal children has got to be having a big influence on what gets focused on. The positive side is, Touhou is still something were you can look at the stuff you like and ignore everything else. Just have to hope the committed creators stay that way until it goes under the radar again.

Some other autistic funny things I found looking at these poll results:
- Anything Three Fairies is dramatically favored by adult males.
- Iku is overwhelmingly voted for by 30-something men. Turns out it was never a joke all along.
- Girls really like TD characters, especially Miko who seems to be a fujo magnet.
- Byakuren voters are the biggest hag supremacists. Miko and Byakuren voters are diametric opposites on nearly everything.
- Eirin shot up 16 places from last year because loads of preteens voted for her. IN anniversary consequence?
- Everybody likes Yuyuko.

The repacker points out the irony of doing this when the PC-98 games themselves contain pirated content.
Oh man, hopefully this is the only time ZUN performed theft like this, when he was younger.

I'd really be sad if he's done other faggoty shit like this.

On another note, I thought I got into this fandom too late to see stuff like this being made still, but here we are.

Wall of text
Ninja'd as I wanted to do a follow up on the piracy post but all that could be explained is in your text. I await to see those old PC-98 titles get their dues for an open reverse engineered source code. Nmlgc and Spaztron did great work in making those games patchable and playable on emulators for conveniences sake.

BeatMARIO's recreation of "Help me, ERINNNNNN!!" likely did that for her because that video managed to get 11 million on the view count. It's a good boost before going back to the normal spot; I expect no less for next year since TH19's characters just fell from their original debut placings.

Thought I’d share a more niche circle, Girls Logic Observatory have some excellent arrangements.

This has to be one of my favourite Necrofantasia arrangements of all time:

This is an interesting Help me Erin cover:

And this is one of their tracks that is extremely well known, it’s up there with Necromantic in terms of views (pretty high for the Circles):
