It's less that Japanese translates well into English, and more that we have a lot more people working on and interested in Nipponese media in the Anglosphere vs Russian media. You're typically going to get much better translations that make more sense in English when more people give a fuck.

Although Russian humor is in fact usually pitch black, and if you're not a fan of that, it's not going to be much fun to experience.
