🥝 Community Kiwi Space Station 13 Server (2024 edition) - Space Station 13

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
@The Bogwater Rises remember Alberyk ? He was the reason Sue could do whatever they wanted.
Oh yes I know. Most dickheadery on Aurora is supported by an admin/mod who are ERP buddies with the dickhead.

I know Alb was the Headmin within the last year or so and seemed genuinely depressed and fearful of the general population of Aurora being troons and other degens. He obviously had to walk on eggshells to say anything and do anything other than basic admin work seemed impossible. I would feel bad for him. I would, if he hadn't given Sue shielding and a lore writing position, been a constant ERP freak with his own cabal, been a massive furry who was given the furry lore of Aurora, and if he didn't choose to actively avoid the outside world for a shitty spessman game.

They want a perpetually calm lifesim with all their female character e-friends. Like someone said, it's a comfortable way to "transition" without actually doing so in real life. They're treating SS13 as VRChat.
Ugh, there are many other games and apps you can roleplay your fantasies of being a woman. Autism level off the charts.

It was genuinely fun to do the jobs and lightly roleplay being on a space station, but as was said earlier, that would get pretty boring without the impending doom you know is coming. It’s fun to have that interruption to your “regular” work day on the space station.

Never understood the concept of playing this game other than constantly killing people and logging onto new accounts to kill the people who killed you. Genuinely wasting time working a virtual job ERP hugbox is something else.
I feel it's more of a "you had to be there" type of thing, at least for the older editions.

It's mostly just the sheer depth of the most ridiculous of shit it has while also being a community project that made it a cult classic. Before the troons it was a dedication to internet culture at the time made into a chaos simulator.

For example of the shit that could happen, there was a certain guy that implanted a voice activated bomb in a dude during a routine surgery that dropped nigga pretty often. He had a task to kill him and figured it would be best to distance himself from the explosion. The bomb would go off based on the word he said the most, killing him and accomplishing his objective while also causing more damage.

After the surgery the guy said "thanks, nigga" and the bomb killed them both.

There is no other video game that you can do that in, that's the biggest appeal, the freedom to do the most absurd bullshit ever while laughing along with eachother. That's how it used to be, at least. You work with absolute fucking morons on the world's worst space station while trying not to explode. You attempt to study a mass of mysterious crystals that can instantly vaporize anything that touches it. You try and discover a super-virus that can make any and all other viruses null and void.

You get the idea, it was just the idea of freedom that made it so special. People could even fuck with the mechanics to create universe decimating effects unintended by the people who added the feature, and it was fun.

Pushing what the game could do to its limits and reaping the rewards are 99% of the most entertaining rounds all have in common. Cut to now, and it's trooned out so much in 14 that there pretty much isn't any room for creativity. All of the modularity of 13 is just gone, and the personalization you could do is just gone. As funny as this might sound, the engine change unironically made it less fun because there's just not as much anarchy. SS14 uses its own engine, made specifically for it. SS13 uses byond which is intended for multiplayer dungeon crawlers turned into an atmospherics simulator space station game for up to 100+ people.

I could go on and on, but those times are all past. It's just a shell, and that's the saddest part of this. Kiwistation (from what I've seen) aims to just bring back that original era of "fuck it, let's add that it looks fun" instead of carefully vetted additions. If you wanted to add something to a fork, most people would see it, test it, and think it was funny enough to include. SS14 only includes what the PMs think should be there, and that's it, which essentially boils down to /TG/+ in a new engine and less features.

I know this all sounds autistic as fuck but this is why people enjoyed it. The game was a passion project by a bunch of retards to have fun together, not some sanitized social hangout spot for faggots.

They were the before times, and it was good.

Yeah.

I can understand using it as a virtual chatroom with gameplay on the side, reminds me of screwing around barely playing the game in various online games for 4 hours chatting with people.

Also fun in the factorio sense to do various autism projects with the construction system, or as a teams (antagonists vs crew)/free for all pvp game.
There's a lot of good ways to play the game that aren't just FFA pvp I think.
I say the only wrong way to play the game is when you start taking it seriously to the point that you call an admin when someone talks out of character in character. Or being very ungodly to someone over chat (ERP et al.).

As for the very common "Playing a video game about doing a job" argument, I point you to the above mentioned Factorio and many other games that are basically just the fun parts of jobs if you think about it. This is no different, if there is a (probably blond haired and blue eyed) man of Hyperborean descent who truly enjoys working to the point he want to work in a video game, let him! Especially if he's willing to tolerate or even support the fun you are having.

Brevity is the soul of wit, so I will keep this brief.
In my opinion, and I believe in the opinion of others, this thread has deteriorated in quality over the course of the last couple of months. This is, I believe, directly related to the amount of SS14 infodumping which has increased in the thread. Prior to these posts, the thread was mostly light shitposting, goofing off, and overall nice posts; now it is 2/3rd's effortpost after effortpost, basically just saying, "Wow, look at this crazy SS14 tranny/retarded ss14 happening." This cuts away from the core content of what the thread *should* be.
I have held this belief for a while, and I have had some discussion with others who agree. Coincidently, a new thread in prospering grounds was made this morning for such posts. (I intended to post this earlier, but real-world circumstances have prevented it.)
Hopefully, this new thread will provide a better niche for these sorts of posts, as they have little relevance to the initial, actual purpose of this thread, which should be to focus on geckogoy's Riviera Station first and foremost.

Honestly, I'll be glad to put all of that shit behind me and just enjoy some classical ol spessmens. The only real reason I posted all that infodump here was to finally have a place to get it off my mind, I'm sorry if it's been hurting this thread.

With the new thread, those posts are done here. I wanna do some retarded shit again to re-spark the joy I have for this game, and this server seems like the absolute perfect place to find that that spark all over again

Yea the OP is updated, initially I thought 'more posts is more better' but honestly the various massive ss14 effort posts are pretty disruptive

Going forward we'll proactively direct people either way (ie from our thread to the community thread and vice versa) and that seems like it will be better for both groups (should be able to recruit from eachother)

You know what, good idea to have different threads. I've seen what happens when a thread tries to combine the best and worst of its topic.

There IS that funny overlap of talking about how batshit insane everything else is on the main servers and pointing at our own server. Genuinely kinda works perfectly both ways lmao.

I never enjoyed factorio and got bored of it quite quickly, for me SS13 feels like when you were a kid with a magnifying glass burning the ants, it's literally what the other players feel like to me. Considering there's no real permanent punishment for just killing people on repeat other than devs removing / nerfing specific items you use to do it.

I think I figured out why the buttons in some menus don't work on Linux through WINE. The HTML <form> just doesn't get submitted for some reason. Ever. It's like form handlers specifically are broken under WINE IE8. Fixing this would require replacing all the minimally fancy buttons with hyperlinks and popup inputs which do work. So, I think I'll simply add a "linux mode" global toggle that does that, unless I find a better solution like making forms work.

It may be possible to call js functions that submit the form from the buttons, rather than relying on a button named 'submit'. Some other people had similar issues in a non-byond wine context and that seemingly worked for them. If you are working on that I suggest pursuing that avenue, that was where I left off on that when I was working on it over the christmas break.

(i would guess perhaps the implicit form submission post request doesn't fire from the html in IE, but if you submit it through the javascript engine instead then that still worked for whoever it was. haven't tried it here though)

I really hoped I didn't ever have to touch javascript again. *sigh* I'm not even sure if javascript even works at all through WINE, or whether it is just a me issue. I'll try.
BYOND 516 also released with WebView2, which could make all of these issues moot, but thus far I have utterly failed to get it to work, despite instructions.

The 'create object' dialog from the game panel (admin verb) has working javascript but a form that fails to submit (the type filtering javascript actually works, including pressing buttons to make javascript calls, you just cannot submit the form). That should be a viable starting point
