I'm a programmer aswell, on the side i've been modding so many games that this kind of code is entirely inoffensive to me, i've come to the general conclusion that unless the code is unusually slow or slows down the programmer's feature addition speed, then structure doesn't matter as it's then strictly a matter of taste and comfort, with like 1 or 2 exceptions for some jap games that are maddeningly shit.

For those not familiar with Preach, he was a full time WoW streamer for over a decade and his not the worst person in the world. His lore series for the different classes are pretty good. Within 4 minutes his able to pretty much break down the situation and pick apart that Pirate is just full of shit ,and just a terrible mage. What still irks me is that he hovered the robes and knew he had mana.

I'm going to make a guess that PirateSoftware will stream tomorrow & will say "he apologised to the two people who died personally" & specifically grab small points of conjecture out of context to defend himself. Especially against Yamato & the other people taking shots at him.

Readability is fucking important, and I doubt he prefers it. He had just no fucking idea what enums are, or whatever could be used in GameMaker, when he started working on this game.
He is just a beginner, not even expert beginner like other grifters. He genuinely has no fucking idea what he does.

If you think the way Mald writes code is just "personal style" and is not "unusually slow" (refer to the level gen code posted earlier) nor does it "slow down" Mald's "feature addition speed", you clearly have never written large codebases, much less maintained them (which, yes, does apply here, as Heartbound is almost a decade old.).
Then again, if all your experience comes from modding games and small projects, it's not that surprising.

If you do work as a True and Honest professional programmer, you are a disgrace on your profession.

As long as the dev can read it and they’re working on it regularly, it’s probably fine.

But code readability is so important because the original dev can still lose context within their own codebase. Using a numerical id for a variable is bad practice because you won’t be able to tell what it is at a glance and you’ll have to look it up every time along with the other dialogue variables around it. It’s not the end of the world, but that can add up cognitively and make even small changes a pain in the ass.

I would be very surprised if Thor could just perfectly switch back and forth with all the streaming stuff he does. There’s a common meme in the industry where you’ll leave a project for a month and then come back, stumble upon the worst piece of shit code you’ve ever seen, start bitching in the team chat, then look at the history and realize that you were the one to write it.

what games are you modding, fucking undertale? any professionally made game after the N64 era (and even quite a few before) are highly data driven and designed to make the content pipeline not complete ass for the entire team to use. anyone who worked at companies doing hardcore programming for 20 years would know basic techniques for streamlining in that fashion, none of which are present in heartbound.
