So it only includes the halfway decent part of the game (the levels) and removes the part no one cares about (the hub world) I don't see the issue why do you want it? Shit I'm playing Unleashed Recomp and I wish I can just play the levels and skip the hub worlds and tails stages.

The reason sonic 06 has the reputation it did was due to it having a good gameplay demo and a weirdly final fantasy ass opening cutscene that was also the trailer for the game, only for everything else after it dropped to be absolute dogwater ass with somehow what seemed to be features and controls from the demo REMOVED and a story that very quickly descended into retardation. You remove all the extra stuff aside from the action stages and you're basically just left with a extended version of the demo. The idea something this retarded could have actually had not-broken gameplay is fucking but fucked it up with being buggy as fuck is kind of incredible. The idea with projects like this is that it "allows people to experience the game as it was intended" and that would include all the retarded plot shit nobody likes. The last of us part 2 was hated by fucking everyone universally with the one thing people said wasn't dogwater was the gameplay, and that's what sonic 06 could have had... It'd still be shit, but just in a different sort of way.

There's also the weird clique that somehow devolved from edgy dumb "what eef sawnic and eggman dissapeared?" shit into trannyslave fanfics or whatever I've seen @JesusChristDenton bring up a few times in different threads last year. It also didn't help that 06's predicament was unique for the time. We're use to seeing triple A studios shit out travesties multiple times in a single year for major IPs. All you have to do is name a semi-popular franchise and it's almost guaranteed that someone butchered and raped it recently. But in 06's case, it was truly a rare spectacle to behold not only a major IP but, a household name, be so poorly made and executed. 06, and Sonic as a brand, has the unfortunate dishonor of being the "first" of it's kind and would spiral for years with an identity crisis caused by the massive failure that was 06, being forever attached to the franchise. Not helped by the fact that this was dropped during an era that many consider to be THE golden age of gaming and right before 2007 which is often held has the greatest year for game releases. For this reason, you still have people like Jim Sterling act as if it was released recently giving newer releases that were good, or at least decent, a negative review solely based on a game made almost two fucking decades ago. Ignoring the fact that what happened with 06 is now an industry standard today and is even worse in many aspects. I don't think SEGA can ever really live down 06, but the franchise seems to have FINALLY stabilized after so long of SEGA constantly experimenting with what Sonic should be to then redo it all over again because some smug fuck had an opinion and brought up "Le Sonic had a bad transition into 3D" and "Le Sonic 06 is bad amirite?" for the gorillinth time. SEGA has taken the route of ignoring these people and shocker, they have managed to do some good things. Frontiers, Sonic X Shadow, the movies and a couple of other minor but excellent additions brought SEGA back in good graces of the fandom.

it's because sonic boom was meant to be a spinoff from the start to become a seperate universe, while sonic 06 was meant to be a hard reboot initially before they went back on that immediately after it's failure. It's why you have weird shit like shadow working for the feds.

Fire & Ice turned out to be an dud, btw. For some reason, the team that was handling the handheld games just gave up with the writing halfway through their projects and just pocketed the money

To be fair, the cartoon of Sonic Boom IS actually good... Although it felt like every other character except for the Sonic cast belonged to another show due to their poor looks. Shame we didn't get a third season, I was hoping that the secret twist of the series is that Sonic and co were trapped in a virtual reality to slowly but surely drive Sonic insane, as that's what was seemingly happening.

The two characters in the image on the left are Tangle and Whisper, two characters who aren't gay (Tangle was meant as a non-romantic replacement for Sonic's original love interest, Sally Acorn, and Whisper had a moment with Silver in her first issue), but they retroactively got shipped by the crew on the comics in order to pander to the fans.

They aren't gay, but the IDW team (Evan Stanley, I think) somehow managed to find a way to get a canonical gay couple into the comics regardless via one of the specials:

Of course, they haven't kissed or done anything explicitly romantic in the comics because I'm 99% sure Sega would have an aneurism before walking into that kind of PR quagmire but that hasn't stopped the comics team from getting as close as possible to hinting at their relationship in the most 2010s Cartoon Network way possible:

I'm not necessarily a Sonic "fan" as in "fanatic", I've enjoyed a few of the games casually and I owned a Dreamcast back in the day. The split between Japanese and American Sonic doesn't matter to me as much as it does for some people... but I'd definitely hope Sega starts vetting the people around their franchise more directly if they're going to have the majority of the non-video game operation run by Americans.

Western creatives in just about any field, animation, comic, and especially video games are becoming increasingly more and more terminally online, leading to shit like this.
