I don't know Alex's living situation but assuming that he lives with his parents, I'm kind of amazed that they allow him to have internet at all.

It's understandable that some young adults might have to live with their parents in this economy but I'm honestly curious about how much they know about their son's issues, or his life online.

My own parents were fairly strict about internet access in general and flipped out over even minor infractions regarding its use. It's kind of a culture shock to see someone who seems to have few restrictions or guidelines in regards to acceptable uses of the web.

I'd bet it's kind of a self perpetuating issue. The reason he acts so spergy and desperate is probably specifically because his family doesn't pay much attention to him or have much hope for him. They just figure "Great, Alex is off in his room on the computer like usual, so we can ignore him".

I'm not sure what's going on with the family overall but they seem like one of those types that are dysfunctional and very emotionally distant behind the scenes.
