Plagued /r/TNOmod and the Reddit HOI4 modding community - When a subreddit for a video game mod turns to utter insanity

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
I looked at the 4chan thread linked earlier. We seem to already be in the desperate damage control stage of things.

Someone needs to properly document the leaks in that thread once things calm down but based on what I can gather:
  • Guy has a power trip, bans a large chunk of the team over petty drama as seen in the leaks posted earlier.
  • Leaks everywhere, total chaos.
  • He unbans several people he just purged.
  • Everyone's pissed off, confused or both.
  • Damage control commences.
Fingers crossed that the mod doesn't implode, it actually got me to reinstall HOI4.

How did big teams of modders coordinate back in the mid 2000's to early 2010's? At this point, Telegram/Signal would be a better alternative to pisscord.
Forums and mIRC, possibly MSM/AIM group chats too. Speaking from experience. Used to work on Red Alert 2 when I was a kid. I also don't think this is a Discord issue. Hand over the key to the city to a lunatic and it's gonna go south and fast even on other platforms. Judging by the leaks this seems more like a petty bastard sorting out grudges and now we all have to suffer. It's how a lot of mods died back in the day too. It's just sad to see it happen to one with so much potential.

In other news, their China team is rebelling. No way this is ending without someone being removed. Freaking hell, it was the one mod I was invested in too. Guess I'm going to have to go back to playing boomer RTS games. :(

>We had a good thing, you stupid son of a bitch! We had a team, we had a mod, we had everything we needed, and it all ran like clockwork! You could have shut your discord, modded, and made as much upvotes as you ever needed! It was perfect! But no! You just had to blow it up! You, and your pride and your ego! You just had to be the man! If you'd done your job, known your place, we'd all be fine right now!

So apparently the TFR twitter was co-ran by John Titor and Czar, and all the hornyposting on it came from Czar :story:
Hi Soot, good to see you again. But just a heads up, this isn't true. Czar was the original media manager under John when he ran the mod, it was always the intention that Czar and a few others had access. After John resigned he left everything and gave control to Czar. John as far as I could tell wanted to stay a good country mile from TFR and HOI4 modding. Not trying to be rude. Just tryna clear up anything.

Fuck you Czar btw.

I got that from the /vst/ thread about HOI4. The guy posting it seems to be an insider considering all the screenshots he has. Then again, he isn't tripfagging but titlefagging so he's probably being impersonated.

Huh. Interesting. And yeah, that's probably what's going on. Just keep your heads on a swivel boys.

That's probably what it was, honestly. It even had a Japan that avoided the Lost Decades and the Soviet Union was still a thing, all of that appeals to the main zoomer demographic that's obsessed with the time period: Troons. With most of the dev team being troons the mod was ruined from the start.
Imagine how much of this could have been avoided only if internet historian had kept making videos about internet history.

Speaking from personal experience, the ParadoxPlaza forums. Paradox liked to keep stuff inhouse (to the point you used to have to register a ParadoxPlaza account just to access the modding forums), and so people would organize through a mod's thread or through dms there. There could be supplemental stuff dependent on how big the team was - skype, google, steam, trello, github, etc. - and some people would filter in from other forums (Something Awful and 4chan being the big ones), but that used to be the main nexus for Paradox modding.

There were two big things that changed that; Steam Workshop integration and Discord. CK2/EU4's workshop integration made it so that while mods were still developed and supported on the forums, most people were getting them from the workshop (albeit more in EU4's case than CK2's - you couldn't get CK2+ on the workshop for most of its lifespan and still have to go to the forums to get HIP). This meant that more people were introduced to modding and, worse, could upload whatever they wanted. Discord came out in 2015, and Stellaris and HoI4 both launched in 2016; the latter two brought in large swathes of people who had no prior experience or connection to Paradox games and their communities, and I'd say that was the point where most big mods ceased being developed on ParadoxPlaza. Mix that in with Reddit's popularity skyrocketing at the time and you get the HoI4 modding sphere.

I should caveat all of this by saying that a 'big' team of modders in the old days of Paradox modding meant more than five or six people; the idea of having a dozen something people just for writing localization was unthinkable back then. EU3's MEIOU was famously just made by one guy (Gigau, who later became a mod on the Plaza) with some input from posters in its thread, and a mod that was big was usually big because people would come and go and not all be working at once (such as the aforementioned CK2+, which is how Wiz got his foot in the door).

I wonder what muppetfan's been up to, haven't been lurking here or anywhere else HOI4 related for awhile, I did a brief read up and saw someone mention he's been "targeted" or some gay shit
He's just been laying low. He's been advised by a few good samaritans to just keep his distance from the HOI4 modding community because as funny as he is, he is... "developmentally challenged" and I don't think anyone here wants to see the guy get fucked with.
