Plagued /r/TNOmod and the Reddit HOI4 modding community - When a subreddit for a video game mod turns to utter insanity

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Having content for just biden/drumpf/commiefornians and then three forms of Professional Racist was always kinda sus, not that I'm complaining about quality nahtzee gameplay but it really does say a lot about the guys coding it, same deal with most other mods having 9001 routes for wholesome sucdems/radsocs and one or two token designated literally Hitlers. With 764 shit being a mainstream meme it was inevitable, total normies casually mention tempel ov blood these days, it's not that bad a sign really.
To the point where it seems like ballwashing propaganda instead of an accurate portrayal.
And a bunch of O9A/764f
To be fair the dirty commie pinkos get the exact same treatment and so do the various flavour of MAGA drumpf can go down, you're only ever the Good Guys (tm) which is probably just irony-jacketing in hindsight.

I miss old TNO lore...
Yeah, when the devs went and added a stupid revisionist evil-EU path for Heydrich, I quit the mod forever

Yeah, how exactly did the 'ironic' 764fags get appointed as jannies? What made the TFR devs look at the totally completely ironic child rapists and say 'lets give them positions of power'?
Discord

The whole point of TFR is that the faction you're playing as see themselves as being morally righteous and on the right side of history, everyone from NAFO Europe to the APLA to AWD. This is the exact same reasoning that got Burgundy in TNO to be so cucked: That it was glorifying the country you're playing as.
While you are correct, the difference between the Atomwaffen and Burgundy is that the Atomwaffen isn't fictitious/purely theoretical (if a fantasist came up with something as cartoonishly evil as they want to be a publisher would reject it out of hand for being too unrealistic). Given HoI4 modding has demonstrably lead people to hitherto niche and obscure ideological positions and political associations via discord and reddit gayops, the possibility that there is a group of satanic pedophiles - or at least retarded edgelords trying to emulate them for the lulz - looking for an in is entirely reasonable.

I'm not saying that TFR needs to change you being the hero in your own story, but I don't think people should act surprised when some ideologically impressionable and disillusioned high schoolers/college students start wanting to emulate the newest, edgiest faction so they can feel special when that has been happening for eight years with various flavors of syndicalism and Russian warlords. And that is the innocent explanation for 764/larpers popping up in the aftermath of what is likely the first of many Discord meltdowns and the Atomwaffen getting content before most other American factions.

There is more content on the way for commie factions, namely the Redneck Revolt but primarily it's because there aren't really any unified leftist groups that aren't just a label like Antifa. All the paths that you could reasonably have for the various commies across America can be integrated into the (fictional) APLA, with the far right there's far greater division in thought, PF are kind of like the APLA for the fascists since they have multiple paths they can go down ranging from Jacksonians (AuthDem) to NatSoc, the NSM is really underbaked (which I covered in a post earlier in this thread around the time of TFR's release when it was basically alpha-stage content) and I'd wager to guess are there for balance so Trump/Biden can't just place all their divisions on the border with the PF and exhaust their supplies, and AWD are really their own deal as the devs designed them to be the hardest faction to play as (I got filtered on my first playthrough when trying to invade the regional unifier in Georgia and NC) and their ending involves nuking the world, in that sense they're really 'unconventional' and would feel out of place within the PF or NSM.

Alternative theory; the Atomwaffen having so much content is indicative of something worse.
Honestly one thing that confused me a bunch was Joshua Sutter being there, As in him not being roundhouse kicked by Russell or Mason after being found out to be a Fed. I get they made the in game lore reason that he was using his Money to fund AWD, But you don't get that money unless ya know, you do your Job as a Snitch and do it well (Plus the fact he was an Informant well before AWD even existed)

I hate the fact i know a guy who's in a fucking feud with Sutter and the ToB tards over them stealing his buddies writings and selling them.

I mean yeah. Years ago i remember coming across all sorts of people larping as real groups like the Base or Atomwaffen, They'd make their entire personality revolve around Siege, but never have read it nor any other Ironmarch literature. I'm convinced a good chunk of them were just Edgelords looking for a community to fit in somewhere.

I believe this was posted before but it's worth a repost in the thread. Joshua Sutter is an unsettling character even amongst the rotten roster of Atomwaffen.

I want to add in some of my own thoughts to this. I sincerely believe that Atomwaffen is a prime example of a political organization surpassing the traditional labeling of left/right/fascist/communist/anarchist/etc. That is to say, they are misanthropic first and foremost (as per O9A's influence on the organization, but even prior to it). Their goals will bounce around whatever political position is necessary to inflict the maximum amount of suffering on their percieved enemies. If this means dragging a federal agent into the picture (at least in the game) to achieve this end, then so be it.

What would you like for the TFR devs to do in relation to Atomwaffen? Why is it their responsibly some dumbass teenagers do not have the bare minimum willpower or sense to realise that omnicidal nazi's are evil, something that is blatantly reinforced through their events, focuses and ending?

As for why they got content first, their faction, ideology, starting position, and goals offer up more interesting gameplay potential and narrative than generic socialist, democratic, junta etc factions that we all know the goals of with some slight variations that would be more or less the same as the existing democratic, socialist, junta factions as well as countless others from other mods.

I want some input. I'm going to code a generic military tree for reunified russia.

I am considering making variations of the army tree depending on the tag. One for right wing paths (fascist, nat soc, etc), one for left wing paths (lib soc and auth soc), and one that is apolitical. Any suggestions?

Suggestions for what, specifically?

Like, what army trees I should code. How specific, if I should make unique ones for some tags, etc.
Well, all of the Soviet unifiers should of course get Soviet equipment. The right-wing paths, depending on how right-wing, should get a mix of Soviet and Reich equipment, while the neutrals should be case-by-case. For example, Magadan under WerBell should have a spattering of American equipment in its tree past a certain point to reflect getting Mitch getting American support. Maybe have a few of the warlord states that start near China possess Japanese equipment, especially that one (I forgot its name) that fights a border war with Japanese-occupied Mongolia?

I don't see how political variations would impact Russia's military doctrine, it'd all boil down to deep battle/strategic theorem or massive infantry assaults. The only tag that really deserves a unique focus tree would be the anarchists purely of how unique their case is.

(I forgot its name)
The People's Revolutionary Council? Yeah, they and Amur should get loads of jap equiment, the Far East unifiers should also focus on planes as well being that Chita has that one wonder that's an airfield. Making it so that their militaries are more adept at air warfare would play into how their army would develop, as the Far East and Siberia as a whole has decent industry due to the SibPlan and the lack of bombings, but an absolutely pitiful population

Nothing. I said as much.

I didn't say that it was. I said that if there is an increase in people larping as ominicidal nazis that it would be a result of the mod making people aware of them, but again, that's the norm for HoI4 modding. They're no more responsible for any omnicidal nazi larping than Kaiserreich is responsible for all the syndicalist larping it spawned.

Starting position is entirely at the discretion of the devs, anyone could have been given that. As for 'interesting' - by which we mean edgy, which is why I think they were included at all - there's a dozen of other factions that could easily offer 'more interesting gameplay potential and narrative' that aren't satanic nazi pedos, because TFR is fanfiction and who gets to do what and who gets priority is at the dev's discretion.

Why does HOI4 modding attract so much retarded drama? I don't see this with other Paradox modding communities like CK3
I find that the closer a mod - any mod - gets to the 1960-contemporary period that generations in the modern West from boomers onward were taught was the 'end of history' (whether temporally, politically, socioculturally, etc.), the higher the chance that it will sooner or later devolve into a hyperpoliticized and/or railroaded shitshow full of the least fun sorts of turboautism spikes, and this is true not just of HOI4 but also Crusader Kings, probably every other game too. After The End for CK2/3 is a prime example: among other things, they did shit like...
  • Loudly disavowing any possibility that the Great Lakes-based Norse might be tied to modern white supremacists;
  • Having SoCal be unified & mostly held by a 600-year-old dynasty of devout yet miraculously tolerant Americanized Muslims founded by the Islam content creator's probable self-insert (who is also coded to be a Strong and Attractive Sayyid), only recently deposed by a cartoonishly evil baby-killing rival dynasty currently represented at game start by a dude named after Ronald Reagan (majorly reeks of libshit worship of sandniggers & demonization of patriots post-9/11 crossing over with & enabling said creator's own ego);
  • And also turned the founder of the Holy Columbian Confederacy (their Southern-based equivalent to the HRE/Byzantines) into a giganigga in a mixed relationship with a white woman who was bvilt for his BBC precisely to own the chuds & kill any notion that it might be a neo-Confederate project. In the CK3 version, the new devs went even further still and renamed the HCC entirely to 'Holy Columbian Commonwealth' as well.
And in case that wasn't retarded enough, the prequel spinoff made by some older devs, Just After The End - well, it takes place in 2055 and is supposed to be a story told from the POV of an in-universe historian from 2666 (represented as an offmap empire), which is already as autistic as it sounds. But among its big hits are...
  • Featuring the aforementioned Strong Attractive Sayyid as a non-occluded playable character;
  • Mocking tradcaths via the Latinate religion, extreme Romeboos who consider Latin a holy language and aren't even treated as part of the Christian religion group anymore due to devolving into idolatry of the 'Roman' part in 'Roman Catholic' (instead they are in the Cult of Saints group, which is supposed to represent degenerated forms of Christianity that have come to worship things other than God, ex. Santa Muerte or the wrestler El Santo in the Mexico-based Sagrado Corazon religion);
  • And perhaps most notoriously of all, a cartoonish depiction of far-left anarchists from Portland teaming up with the descendants of beaner migrant workers in the Inland Northwest's agricultural areas, who follow a red-tinted splinter of Catholicism called La Hermandad that's explicitly based off the real-life United Farm Workers (it's even in their religion icon and they've tilted so hard into the union/socialist aspects that not only do they get a unique government type, but like the Latinates they've been put in the Cult of Saints group rather than still being considered Christians), to fight against Dominionists - American Christian nationalists who are explicitly described as 'Christofascists' in some of the mod's lore blurbs - who come from the Idaho Panhandle.
  • The Dominionists canonically lose and by 2666 (the start of ATE) will have been buckbroken into oblivion by the ascendant Gaians, who being turbofeminist treehuggers big into shit like astrology, magic crystals & hiking descended in part from Wiccans and the aforementioned Portland ancoms (Black Cross), represent an evolution of American liberal trends and everything the Dominionists' real-life basis hate.
The Dominionist/Black Cross/La Hermandad content BTW was the brainchild of Laura/Logan Couch, the suicide-baiting founder of both BTWH and, in real life, CHAZ. He's long gone from JATE - they cut ties with him after finding out that, like other trannies, he was into 'ageplay' (diddling children) - but never got around to excising or at least significantly trimming back his baleful influence, you can still find his self-insert as the Black Cross priestess (a true honest womyn, and at least more humble than the guy who made his self-insert the invincible sultan of all SoCal from San Diego to LA!) of Cap Hill in Seattle in-game. JATE itself is dead now anyway, not only did the founder (Sayyid, the Muslim self insert guy) leave more than a year ago but the remaining devs recently announced they're going on an indefinite hiatus and that even if they do push something out again it'll just be a bugfixing patch, though unlike BTWH they at least got as far as an 0.2 version with two playable bookmarks (last release came out on Christmas of 2024).

CK2 AtE is more fun to be frank, the Reagan reference just seems to be just that, a reference, since Reagan was governor of California and whatnot, and the guy's even brown if you have the appropriate face DLC. The Sayyids almost never take over when controlled by AI anyways, and they have a heresy that's less syncretic with Ceticism (the California hippie-shinto-new age religion) and more Shia-traditionalist. The Sayyid start is fine since there's basically zero muzzies outside of Chicago (Which is owned by a Catholic duchess at the start) and Guyana (Which has a good chance of being conquered by Brazil or the Hindu 'jeets) and provides a nice challenge of conquering California and then the wider West Coast.

Well yes, I consider CK2 anything to be more fun purely on the basis that the game they're mods of is far deeper & more feature-complete than CK3.

I'd be more inclined to give the Reagan thing the benefit of the doubt if I didn't remember how pervasive and extreme the devs' liberalism could get (for one I 100% remember that the old tranny head dev, 9KBits, shilled hard for BLM and tranny causes when he was still active). Superficially, Ronald Carmine himself doesn't even seem like a bad guy based on his traits. But the lore still dictates that his dad took SoCal from the Abbas (Sayyid dynasty) via a coup where he kills his own sister and baby nephew, and unless he cucks out in his response to Zakariyya Abbas revealing this crime (either letting a hostile rival claimant live or outright abdicating his throne in guilt) he loses his most positive trait (Honest), so yeah. That the Carmines are 'brown' is nothing special since it's the default GFX for the entire Angeleno culture to which they belong (and their ancestor, Vivianne Flowers, is also 'brown' both in ATE and JATE).

My contention is that the Abbases shouldn't be in the mod to begin with, at least not in the ridiculously outsized role they have. For starters, Orange County being their home base doesn't make a whole lot of sense: it doesn't have the largest Islamic population in California even today (~100,000 compared to ~500,000 in LA and ~250,000 in the Bay Area), and that number was surely smaller still around 2000 when the apocalyptic Event happened (according to JATE, since founder Zakariyya was canonically alive to have witnessed it). As far as I can tell, the only reason they're from that part of California is that Sayyid (the creator) is too which, yeah, not exactly beating the idealized self-insert allegations there.

And secondly, I think the Mary Sueishness is really fucking obvious when theirs is a dynasty that has lasted 600 years in the male line, ruled the Kingdom of SoCal (a huge area stretching from LA/San Diego to Las Vegas) for like 570 out of those 600 years (Carmines only took over a generation prior to the start of ATE) and their specific form of Islam is pretty much an American liberal's fantasy of the religion, being far nicer and more tolerant than actual forms of Islam (ironically represented as heresies - actual Shi'ism being the Alawiyya heresy of wholesome 100 Californian Islam you mention, and real Sunnism being the Salafist heresy of the other main Islamic sect, 'Unitarian', whose lore explicitly describes it as somehow American Shias and Sunnis putting aside their 'minor' differences to unite against the rest of America lmao). No other dynasty gets to rule that benevolently & prosperously for that long over the same chunk of territory, certainly not in California.

And yes, as said, they do have a heresy that's more like actual Shia Islam (as practiced by say, Hezbollah and the Iranian mullahs IRL) and aren't house niggers for the Cetic Emperor. The same is true of Californian Christians, they have both a sect that are the Cetics' Christian-flavored house niggers (Nazarene) and a more based one that isn't (True Cross, a heresy of Nazarene much as Alawiyya is a heresy of Imamite at game start). But I don't complain about that because at no point are any Christian Californian dynasties obviously marked out as a dev's GMPC and given the Mary Sue treatment as the Abbases are, in fact they're very few in number and don't have any significant history IIRC (I know there's an Orthodox Nazarene in Redding, and Salma Hayek's future reincarnation is the Countess of Joshua Tree who is a marriage option for the 2666 Zakariyya Abbas - add another strike to the Mary Sue column).

In fact, looking into the history files, Californian Christianity in general has had far less impact on the region than the Imamites' super speshul brand of Islam as well. They never even unify any of the four component kingdoms of California - Jefferson, Gran Francisco, the Valley and SoCal - for long like the Abbases did SoCal or the Romano-Humanist (Reddit atheists) Aureuses do for Gran Fran. The closest they get is when Joseph Gonzalez 'the Shepherd' briefly unites the Valley and he's Sagrado Corazon (ATE)/La Hermandad (JATE), which is to say, Cult of Saints rather than Christian mechanically (also, guess fucking who kills him and destroys his kingdom...yet another Abbas Imam of SoCal). Rather ridiculous considering how many Christians there still are in California, even today, compared to Muslims.
