the stairsteps in 2015 are spam datacenters coming online

that doesn't account for the level of spam on that site. Have you seen /pol/ lately? There are multiple datacenters working on that
they aren't just making nonsense posts, they're fomenting consensus and shit. This is extremely effective amongst modern internet users. It's especially effective on Reddit users
Reddit is a site that is designed to manufacture a consensus. The upvote/downvote system pushes anything that the hive mind on there disagrees with to the very bottom and promotes comments they do agree with. Anybody who goes against the grain is just downvoted and endlessly shit on because any comment that poses any dissident has 300 downvotes and 50 snarky replies within 5 seconds of it being posted.

Spam and slides have been on the site forever. The difference is that 4chan got filled with third-worlders and reddit refugees who are literally too stupid to not fall for it.

Go look at an internet penetration graph for any overpopulated third-world shithole and you'll notice a correlation with 4chan becoming unusable.

Wished they elaborated a little bit on that. I have no idea what to think of a "mistaken suid binary", nor how you can explore a remote system undetected for something like that without anyone eventually noticing.
There was a setuid binary called /usr/local/bin/suid_run_global which simply execves a perl script. Said perl script was writable by www so it could be hijacked to acquire a shell.

you think that's bad, you should look into what you can do to most of the automated home lawn sprinkler control systems
i like that guy Matt Brown on youtoob, does a bunch of "reverse engineer" videos involving consumer electronics. i always knew you could dump flash contents via uart bridge, but i guess i never knew the scale of it lol. damn near every piece of consumer grade internet-connected electronics can be broken into, because nobody ever bothers to change the console username/password.

I never saw that myself, but I did see fags embed CP in innocuous images on /vg/ before that shit got shut down.
I know that the /gw2g/ was completely shutdown for years because as soon as you made the general or put gw2 in the OP of a general, it would get bombed with non-sensical posts from some bot. I never found a reason, but it was a dedicated autist running it.

negative, the difference is the drastic improvement in spambots and the fact that almost 100% of spambot posts can currently pass the Turing test

Most recently the one I remember was /tesg/ getting firebombed with CP/gore for a couple weeks straight.
Started with the guy making AI generated lolicon with thread regular’s avatars.

If someone wants to write a SUCCINCT, but complete summary that covers the main FAQ, go for it. I would feature it.
Also needs to deboonk/confirm commonly repeated but disputed memes, like was user info leaked, pass owners, .gov and .edu addresses of jannies, etc. Needs a serious just the FAQs approach.

Reddit is currently the biggest brainwashing machine on the planet. Echochambers so effective and hermetically sealed a 80's propagandist would never believe such a thing was possible.

Really makes you wonder why websites don't just range-ban the entirety of India, SEA, Pakistan and so on.

I'd tell you to go back to /x/ but I can't. But people like you were why /x/ was cool at one point. I mean it was always 90% schizophrenic gibberish but there was some good schizophrenic gibberish there too.
Nothing will match watching videos about creepy 4chan bullshit where they mention a thread in /x/ and remembering reading that exact thread as it played out. I never believed anything I read on /x/ as fact, but it was still one of my favorite boards to read.
“I wish there was a way to know you're in the good old days before you've actually left them.”

Couldn't care less if <random retarded poster> came from 4chan or reddit or <new image board of the month>.
Everyone is a retard until proven not; and in no time the nots will join us in laughing at the tards.
That being said, I can feel the collective IQ of the farms dropping below it's average of a nice and cool 78.
4chan users are far more cleverer than you think.

The 2025 4chan Hack

On April 15th a Sharty member posted screenshots on the /soy/ board of 4chan's moderation panels, database (using phpMyAdmin), and the private janitor board, making it clear he had gained access to 4chan's restricted moderation areas as well as full database access.

The hack exploited a vulnerability in the PDF file upload feature on specific boards (/gd/, /po/, /qst/, /sci/, /tg/) by uploading malicious PostScript which was not properly checked and was processed by an outdated 2012 version of Ghostscript to generate thumbnails. This allowed execution of arbitrary code. The exploit then leveraged a misconfigured suid binary to escalate privileges to a global user, gaining unauthorized access to their extremely outdated and extremely vulnerable FreeBSD 10.1 (released November 14, 2014 and reached end of life in 2019). After gathering as much information as he could, the hacker then proceeded to re-open the /qa/ (Questions & Answers) board which was previously permanently closed in 2021.

Why?

Sharty claims the reason for the hack stems from the original 4chan /qa/ drama around 2021. /qa/ was the former unlisted 4chan board for discussing site-wide meta. It was originally founded in January of 2015 as a platform for moot (the founder of 4chan) to host a question and answer thread before he would quit as the site owner. After moot left and over time, the board became inundated with shitposters from many different boards. The exact reason for the /qa/ shutdown remains speculative but Sharty users believe mods aimed to clean up off-topic threads as /qa/ was known for soyjak spam and schizoposting. The board was permanently locked on November 3rd, 2021.

Exposed information:

The following information was exposed following the exploit:

F.A.Q.

How long will 4chan be down?

The 4chan servers are currently shut down. Since they will most likely need to reformat, reinstall, and restore the database, it could take weeks. Depending on the updates/upgrades, code might also need to be refactored.

Did Pass holder information get leaked?

4chan processed payments via Stripe and did not hold payment information. However, the hacker alleged some information about pass holders was available to him, but he has stated he has not released it (1) out of goodwill, and (2) out of speculation the FBI would more seriously investigate what is currently a drive-by Internet graffiti incident into a serious financial data breach. It is unclear what he has access to, but supposedly emails are securely one-way hashed.

Were any jannies feds?

Rumors that .gov email addresses were used have been debunked by the hacker. However, many jannies did use .edu email addresses.

Are there alternatives to 4chan?

4chan is the largest English-speaking imageboard and no other site comes close. The current alternatives being suggested have a lot of lolicon/shotacon content on them, so we will not advertise them here.

The hacker chose to promote the Soyjak Party at soyjak.st, which is now the fastest English-speaking imageboard we are aware of.

The Kiwi Farms has several analogues to 4chan boards and communities, but the Kiwi Farms's off-topic section is generally much slower, does not support anonymous posting, and is strictly safe for work.

/3/ & /gd/ & /ic/ -> Art and Literature board,
/a/ & /tv/ -> Multimedia board,
/biz/ -> The Bidness, in particular our Precious Metals thread,
/ck/ -> Food board,
/diy/ & /o/ & /out/ -> Self-Sufficiency board,
/fit/ & /pw/ -> Health & Fitness board,
/g/ -> Internet & Technology board,
/mu/ -> Music board,
/pol/ -> Articles & Happenings board (not visible to guests) and Happenings board,
/vp/ -> Pokemon Griefing thread,
/vt/ -> Live Talent board,
/v/ & /vg/ & /vr/ & /tg/ -> Games board, in particular we have a community-organized Space Station 13 server.
