It says a lot that /qa/ was the funniest thing that happened on 4chan in years, and it was only good because 4chan staff left it the fuck alone to develop however the users wanted, then it got nuked.

Update on 8chan Moe. It seems they’ve grown incredibly thanks to 4chan refugees. The average used to be 200 posts per day and now it’s nearing 4000. This is now the most posters 8chan has had since the 2010s. Most traffic since the Christchurch shooting 6 years ago

I think you're quite right in your assessment of where the code is vulnerable. Exploit-db has a number of possible PoCs for the payload file if we go on the assumption that the threat actor was correct about this version of ghostscript being "from 2012".

on HN someone said they were exploring something similar with EXIF in images, I can't imagine this sharty user was the first person to actually succeed, or people were just extremely unaware of PDF parsing being an attack vector (I sure as hell was)

there were a fucking shit ton of users and there was a fucking shit ton of traffic. It's hard to remember specifics but QPS was in the mid to high double-digits on normal daytime hours and spiked into the triple-digits during primetime

8chan served some fraction (probably less than 30%) of the traffic served by 4chan

everything was a potential problem, from the network filesystem to the top-of-rack switch

that would have been my first guess. it sounded like a load-balancing issue more than software or even server hardware. if i had to guess you solved it with a more robust switch and an extra application server. regardless, i think the kf sysadmins could take 4chan over and solve it without a disaster recovery plan in 72 hours and even faster with. definitely not 60 days. you're selling yourself short!

Yes, they did. I tried to engage with some of the nobody threads but it wasn't actually about anything, it was just random bullshit. I see the other guy mentioned the vampire threads. I actually tried to tell them about mixing snake venom and blood to have visions and reap the benefits doctors have been trying to extract from venom for years because the blood coagulates with it and makes it harmless while still getting the benefits of all the protein, and that this is traditionally drank in Tibet out of a Kapala, the true origin of the Holy Grail, but they just brushed it off and went back to roleplaying. The root problem here seems to be people just didn't take the board seriously.
