I think he does have a point.

After all this time, that lazy fuck ZUN can't make anything different than an STG. It's like if you did play one of them, that's basically all of his catalog. It barely changes other than the gimmicks that are swapped around every two entries. At least, that's how I would rationalize it.

Even in its own class, Touhou is nothing too extraordinary compared to something like Gradius, R-Type, Salamander, DoDonPachi, Ikaruga, and Zero Wing. It's only advantage over the rest is its music and that's it. Everything else I've listed plays a lot better with less frustrating gameplay and there's so much more to find on Steam.

Or you can just keep replying to low-effort posts like a retard.

Check out Danmaku Unlimited 2 and 3. They do everything Touhou does better - yes, even the music. I'm personally rather hyped for Wyver Ultra.

touhou has a colorful cast of cute characters with individual quirks and unique personalities. anything with that is like crack cocaine to the internet, and popularity-wise, that (along with the music) puts it ahead of other schmups despite touhou games having rather mediocre gameplay compared to them. ZUN also seems to prioritize the aesthetics of the danmaku and the themes they have with the associated character, rather than innovating how the game feels and making it more satisfying for the player. he changes the formula by giving each game a different gimmick, but never irons out the jank lying underneath. of course, it's not like he really needs to, because most of the fans have never 1cced a single game anyway.

It places it ahead on the visual aspect but nothing on its gameplay is what I was trying to say. Doesn't have to master all of the core pieces and so the presentation with its theming is what it does best.

If he really wanted to create the best game he can while making it as full-proof as possible, that would mean he'll have to spend more time play-testing his product. But there's no room for that when the next convention and podcast episode to record is right around the corner. So what you get is just the same game copy pasted with a different mechanic each time.

It makes the original shmups very predictable but since the fans don't care all that much for the genre, it very much makes it a character and music factory. That is what people come here for and it's perfectly fine as is.

I just realized that Touhou has the kind of Appel off Legos i mean they feel kind of samey to some poeple, leaves you the chance to imagine and enjoy it as you want (Only play the games,only read the mangas,etc) and always magnets autists in general,no matter what side of politics ,sex or nations who can enjoy the franchise.
So in the end kind off the same appeal that Mario has but a not as super mainstream as Mario.
And also don´t forget the Legacy had on Internet back in the day which helped it to get as big as it is now.
For Example in Japan has a more Family Friendly Image(That amusement park collab,ZUN mentioning that he saw Flandre being drawn in his child´s school,etc) by than we usually see here in the west.
