and the quicksave key is the space bar
"and the quicksave key is the space bar"

"and the quicksave key is the space bar"

"and the quicksave key is the space bar"

:lossmanjack:
you don't get it guys
you just don't get it
this is a subversion of expectations
it's a direct attack on the videogame design zeitgeist

what, you want space bar to do things like select menu options or, heh, jump?

no, here spacebar saves your game
F5 is for jump. F8 is for crouch

if you use spacebar as the normal midwit way to click through menus you WILL break your game

oh and also, you're banned. no, you will not be unbanned.

As a 60% keyboard user, I really appreciate finally being thought of. I can access full functionality in Heartbound without the use of a function key, and I think this is probably the cope im going to go with as for why it is the way it is.

How the actual fuck, from a game design perspective, do you ever, FUCKING EVER, consider the spacebar for QUICK SAVING?!

There's unchecked ego, and then there's "so unfathomably retarded, you are a danger to yourself and others". Jason has officially become the later.

Some streamer tried the march monthly update of Heartbound, which is STILL the latest update, and it turned into an embarrassment for Mald before the game even started. Apparently, Pirate didn't do anything to prevent players from corrupting their save file by quicksaving in menus or during cutscenes, and the quicksave key is the space bar.

All you have to do to softlock your game is accidentally press the space bar at the wrong time, and resetting the progress is the only fix.
As seen in the clip, it appears that the space bar is also used to speed up the credits, and if you do that, the game will break.

I understand that this is some kind of beta update, but there seems to have been no testing before mald pumped it out to steam, which is like insane behavior or something.

At the very least why is spacebar your quicksave and not F5?
You would think there'd be a check or something for "if on the menu" disable save...
20 years of coding.

"Any chatters who've played heartbound?"
I laughed.

There is no quicksave in wow, only blink blink blink. But from what I gathered, you're supposed to save by picking up save icons in game and this quicksave feature is a debug feature and not supposed to be in the final game, but still he shipped it to players as is, not even bothering to try to make it safe
So its a Debug feature at that too? Crazy. Spacebar is such a terrible button for anything to save. Damn thing is like 8% of your keyboard.

Thats what drives me nuts about it. Even as a debug feature, the spacebar is such a big and frequently used key on a keyboard that putting something like quicksaving on it is such horrible practice.

I get debugging a game is a painfully time consuming process, but you sure as shit don't make the key something as common as the spacebar. There's way too much of a chance of it being hit by mistake. If it was something like F5, this bug probably wouldn't of even been found if he left it in considering a whole 12 people have even played his game. Hell it took a month for someone to find such a glaring bug because so few people give a shit about his dogshit Earthbound wannabe.

This is likely a small brain take, but what is wrong with ctrl+s as a quicksave hotkey? It's probably hardwired into a lot of peoples brains already as the save shortcut.

Idk, I think the issue with that is a lot of people use ctrl for a function in game like crouch, or its used to queue up actions in some cases. ctrl F5 is perfect because you cant really accidently hit it in any normal circumstance.

For things like art and documents, the key combo is ideal as the chances of it being hit by mistake are pretty slim, don't want to have to rewrite/redraw an entire project because you hit the save key by mistake at a bad time. Theres also the fact the ctrl key is explicitly used for command functions, its not a key that sees normal use outside of this purpose. The spacebar is the most commonly used key on a keyboard, in programs and games, mapping a command function to it is utterly retarded.

For something thats far more moment to moment and somewhat out of your control (debugging a game for example), a singular key is preferable so it can be done quickly and easily. You just don't want it to be a key so damn big that you may graze it just by leaning in the general direction of the keyboard, and again, you don't want it mapped to the most common key on the board, especially in a video game. It's damn near instinct for most gamers to hit the spacebar expecting to "jump", "advance text" or some other extremely common action, which really underlines how monumentally retarded mapping it to spacebar is.

Nothing imo. I use ctrl+s for a debug quicksave because it seemed like the obvious thing to choose, though it's a turn based game so having to press two keys to save isn't as big of a deal as it would be in an FPS, but mald's game is literally a visual novel so I can't think of any good reason to not use it.

i had to check

help a nigga real quick
in the demo, quicksave isnt in the spacebar as there is no quicksave

is that a current build thing?
is there a source?
are we being trolled?
From the livestream clip posted, I got the impression that Mald had left some developer save feature in the build he uploaded to Steam, since the streamer was able to accidentally save his game while on the main menu.

Definetly looks like save corruption from a debug feature being active. If I can find a 3rd party key (so Jason gets no money), I'll dick around and try to figure out whats going on, but I'm not about to give this hack fraud $10 to playtest his game he'll never finish, for him.

You probably have to be on "monthly_update" branch to experience this, as shown on 3:38. The original vod was posted well after the march update came out so it's probably the latest version. It's hard to find any recent information on the game because no one plays it

The saving feature is mentioned here: https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/567380/view/508445172204307048?l=english
