I do think if they actually had some respect for computers and had to learn about how they work and how often they fuck up when using a real system they wouldn't do this shit. But a certain someone removed that from the world:

Kids nowadays literally don't even understand file/folder structures. If they don't understand computers then why would they have any respect for them? Years ago you'd actually be getting something unique from a computer whereas they have an iPhone to film this shit because the Chromebook is "nothing special"

Kinda off topic but X86 Chromebooks are now what Thinkpads were 10 years ago. I bought one with a charger, already replaced harddrive, and already installed Linux mint for $40 off ebay like a week ago. Incredible stuff

I remember my Chromebook. I think they were just rolling them out as a thing. I dropped it once or twice and remembered thinking I was screwed because of the possible damage (it was fine, though). I could never imagine anyone demolishing them en masse. I'm pretty sure if you broke it you had to pay for it. In terms of the app store the rules were lax, but there are some websites that were blocked as a built in administrative feature (rather than just the school WiFi) which is pretty funny in hindsight.

Tumblr and 4chan being blocked on my machine regardless of network probably saved me from some developmental stunting.

This is the predicament of computers in schooling, if they're essential to everything then you can't ban kids accounts or remove their devices because then they can't actually attend almost any class and its a PITA for the teachers

I don't see anyone learning to program on these like how boomers learned to program on the commodore or the spectrum.

It just doesn't seem right. There's people in impoverished countries who would benefit from Chromebooks, and they're being destroyed for 10 minutes of fame. It's a shame that this is how the current generation of kids act nowadays...

This post changed my mind on the matter. As soon as I realized that these kids are stunting on the thirdies, I began to come around. Then I noticed that these kids are also stunting on public school teachers, and my opposition to this crumbled like a house of cards. Thanks for setting me straight.

That's one interesting detail you've brought up, back when computers were starting to get tested in the education system (around early to mid 80's, this was when the Apple II was running against shit like the Commodore VIC-20 and whatnot), the main focus of them (AFAIK, correct me if I'm wrong please) was teaching the students on how to use the computer itself.

Of course due to the limitations at that time you obviously couldn't apply them for the same purpose you do nowadays (facilitating/simplifying and organizing previously existing schoolwork), but this strategy of teaching the kids how to operate and work their way around a computer (or, nowadays, the OS/GUI), is something that's been desperately missing from modern education.

Like many users have said on this thread before, kids nowadays just DO NOT know how to work with a (Windows, mostly) computer. I'd say this is both their and the school's fault. There needs to be some kind of incentive from the staff themselves to actually teach the students on how to not be a bumbling retard with fairly user-friendly interfaces, but there (obviously) needs to be interest from the students as well.

Using something as locked down and pozzed as ChromeOS is going to do FAR more harm than good. Hell, I think Linux would serve them even better than bog-standard Windows.

Depends on which Chromebook model you get. There are lots of models that have SHIT tn panels that absolutely suck balls to look at. If you're going to get one you would preferably want to get an older model that has a m.2 slot

Google and other major tech companies are trying to dictate that AI and coding should be mandatory parts of the school curriculum which removes tons of soft skills from our future doctors and rocket scientists.

Google, Apple, Amazon and co should be the ones paying for these fucking Chromebooks in the first place since they stand to benefit in the order of trillions of dollars from their devices and software "way of life" taking over the world.
