A third of the book is interesting stuff about gambling, a third of the book is complaining that nobody understands the unique way he sees the world and his models and the last third is name dropping how he can talk to people like Sam Bankman-Fried even when they're facing prison. The premise is that there's two types of people in the world: The Village (people from Twitter, well Bluesky now I guess, that Nate hates and are always wrong) and The River (people who see the world mathematically and understand risk) with all the good people obviously in the latter.

The funniest part, and I've only seen one review that mentions this, is that a number of people he interviews like Peter Thiel tell him his framework for the book and explanation of the world is stupid because people in the first group use models all the time they're just often shitty and people in the latter group (like say SBF or Yud) use models that seem rigorous but are wrong all the time too.

Nate also seems to be unaware of the knowledge problem even through probably two-thirds of the book could be used as evidence for it. (Though part of this depends on if you think SBF really thought FTX's shit could work or if it was nothing but an outright scam he knew had zero chance.) Which probably explains why he falls for Yud's stuff about AI.

I think this is related to her desperation for a stable marriage and children. She cannot bring herself to change--a necessity to attract the traditional man she wants--nor can she bring herself to settle for a Rationalist fruit. She sees that her future holds no hope and no children, so she consoles herself via consumption because it's something she can control. In a way, she's denying herself her own future happiness. This--not having her dream because she's broke--does not hurt her vanity as much as accepting her other personal failures. Spending her savings also removes the possibility that she'd easily afford being a single mom. She's really self-defeating.

From her point of view, AI will surely end humanity (at least as we know it) within her lifetime, so why bother contributing to a 401(k) or taking care of her health? And since she believes the end will actually come even sooner, why even bother socking away money in a rainy day fund or making medium-term decisions to improve her economic position like buying a house and building equity?

Of course, AI fever dreams aside, many people would disagree with the premise that shortsighted pursuit of pleasure is a desirable way to spend your last months or years. In my opinion, the AI fears serve as a post hoc justification for their preexisting hedonism, which they realize at some level is morally bankrupt and does not provide their lives the meaning we all desire.
