It's perfectly acceptable for agnostics or even the faithful to light a candle in their house in hope or remembrance of a friend or loved one. I'm very behind in this thread, but you can tell Nick is a lolcow because if he had even a shred of common sense/decency, he would have responded to Elissa's diagnoses with a simple, "I'm sorry to hear about that. We obviously don't get along but I wish her the best."
